Seeing as grasping at self is a reversed view. Seeing as completely established is the correct view. Other's power belongs to both. Thus, it is proclaimed from the established tenets that in other-power, a substance with two parts cannot be found. That is, like the fire wheel, one discerns three things: the firebrand, the wheel, and the light. Among these, seeing the firebrand as a wheel is a reversed view. Seeing it as a firebrand is the correct view. The light belongs to both, like saying that. If the firebrand is also established as a substance and the wheel is also established as a substance, then the light could also be established as belonging to both. If the wheel is established as a substance but the firebrand is not established as a substance, then the light is the very nature of the wheel; there is no second part. Even if the firebrand is established as a substance but the wheel is not established, it is the same. Therefore, at the very time when it appears as a wheel, one spark of fire gradually suppresses the place, because the wheel is never established. Therefore, the light is merely the firebrand; there is no two-part light. Similarly, if both are established as substances, and the completely established is also established as a substance, then conceptualization could belong to both. At the very time when it appears as two, it is the nature of self-awareness, because the two are never established. Therefore, the two parts of conceptualization are not established. Therefore, in the afflictions, a substance to be abandoned cannot be found. Thus, even if one follows the tenets of those who view things as real, one cannot find a substance to be abandoned in the afflictions. Then, in the manner of the Middle Way, there is nothing to be established in ultimate truth in all phenomena. For those who wish to pacify all elaborations, how could one find a substance to be abandoned? Know this. To this, someone might say: Even though there is no substance to be abandoned in ultimate truth, in conventional truth, one can discern correct conventional truth and incorrect conventional truth. Therefore, in correct conventional truth, there is no contradiction in saying that afflictions have a substance to be abandoned. To this, one should say: When one wants to establish something as truly existent, the differences in conventional

All the distinctions that can be differentiated can be similarly proven. When someone believes that something that needs to be truly proven cannot be proven, all the conventional distinctions become indistinguishable. Furthermore, it is said that the distinction between true and untrue conventionalities is made by the difference between being able to perform a function and not being able to, even though they appear similar. For example, the shape of a pot can perform the function of holding water, but the shape of the image of a pot cannot perform the function of holding water. This distinction only proves that the substance of a person can perform a function, but it does not prove that the substance of a dharma can perform a function. So, how is the substance of a person proven? There are two kinds: external and internal continuities. The internal continuity refers to regarding each of the continuities of persons such as men, women, humans, and gods as a separate substance. According to the perspective of dharma, each person is composed of the six elements, the six sense sources, and the five aggregates. The mind arises as one only from the collection of many. Therefore, the substance of sentient beings such as gods and humans cannot be found. From the perspective of external continuity, when things like pillars and pots continue to exist in a similar way, one perceives that there is one nature of the pot or one nature of the pillar. But these things are also just the five elements and the six external sense sources. The substance of one nature of the pot cannot be found. Therefore, the statement that "the pot performs the function of holding water" also proves that the substance of a person performs the function. According to the substance of dharma, whatever appears to the mind as a characteristic of meaning is itself a dharma. In that case, the image of the pot appears because of the pot, which is only due to the color and shape of the pot, and not due to tactile sensations, etc. The image can also perform the function of color. The performance of a function is generally determined by benefit and harm. For example, the image of the sun harms the eyes, while the image of the moon benefits them. Both can dispel shadows. The function of holding water is
