If it is taught thus, then know that all dharmas are equal to illusion and mirage, etc. Holding it with the vessel of great mindfulness, merely abiding in the state of great equanimity is called the means of establishing the mind of enlightenment. Among these, being equal to illusion has already been explained in detail above. Thus, depending on whether one views it as equal or not equal to illusion, it becomes the difference between mindfulness and great mindfulness. Among these, mindfulness refers to engaging in the actions of body, speech, and mind with mindfulness, through the distinction of memory and wisdom. If this mindfulness is present, then even when abiding truly and equally in the mind, one should also truly know that if it sinks, one knows it is sinking, and if it is agitated, one knows it is agitated. One should also truly know that the antidote to sinking is to uplift it with intention, and one should also truly know that the antidote to agitation is to suppress it with equanimity. Even if the mind abides equally, free from the pain of sinking and agitation, one should still truly know it. In particular, one should also truly know that it is not a place to generate the effort of practicing antidotes. This kind of mind is like a watchman, like guarding a vessel filled with water so that it does not spill out. This arises from viewing it as not equal to illusion. For example, elephants are naturally arrogant and drunk. If they drink wine, they become even more drunk. If they are not controlled by iron hooks and iron chains, one fears that they will cause various faults such as destroying walls and houses, and killing beings. Therefore, one always controls them with two ropes. If they are controlled and tamed, they have great merits such as destroying enemy armies and stabilizing battlefields. Thus, due to the influence of both faults and merits, one has a mind of hope and fear. Therefore, one always guards it with two ropes. Similarly, the elephant of the mind, which is naturally difficult to tame, drinks the wine of afflictions such as desire, and near afflictions such as sinking and agitation, becoming extremely agitated and afflicted. If it is not controlled by the iron chain and iron hook of mindfulness, then it will always accumulate the causes of samsara and the lower realms, namely, bad deeds. Therefore, its faults are great.

If there is a fear of falling, and if one is seized by the mindfulness dharani, one will not be controlled by the afflictions, because one has great qualities that connect to the great fruits of heaven and liberation, so one has hope. Having these two great mentalities of hope and doubt, therefore, one should protect oneself with the mindfulness dharani. So, what is great mindfulness? For example, the great ocean held by a great shell container, even if endless great rivers flow into it, there is no fear of falling. Even if it is moved by the wind of time, or destroyed by the wings of the sky, there is no fear of overflowing from the great shell container. Similarly, when one realizes that all phenomena are like illusions, one is free from the mentality of hope and doubt, so one has the mentality of realizing that there is no difference between guarding and not guarding. For example, when an illusory elephant appears and is seen, because one knows it is an illusion, one will not have the doubt that losing it will lead to the destruction of the place. Nor will one have the hope of being seized and tamed by the dharani to protect the place. Therefore, one does not rely on the dharani of iron hooks and iron chains. Relying on two kinds of mindfulness, one will transform into equanimity and great equanimity. So, what is equanimity? It is the mentality of abiding without afflictions. Because there is no inequality of the two pains of sinking and agitation, it is called obtaining the equality of mind, which is the initial equanimity. Then, even more than that, the mind becomes free, one does not need to subdue the two pains with antidotes, thus obtaining the state of the mind abiding peacefully, this is called the intermediate equanimity. Then, the mind becomes extremely free, there is not even the doubt that the two pains will arise, nor is there the effort to rely on antidotes, thus obtaining the state of the mind being naturally accomplished, this is called the final equanimity. So, what is great equanimity? When one realizes that it is like an illusion, because one has great mindfulness that is inseparable from the dissimilar and the antidote, one does not strive to abandon the incompatible, one does not strive to rely on the antidote, one does not strive to manifest the meaning, one simply abides in the unconditioned state. Again, using the example of a mirage, just as it does not move from the nature of the sky, it appears as if it is filled with river water. At the time of appearance, there is actually no water.
