One should observe the bird. One should manifest the fruit. If the nature of the Dharma is so true, then why didn't the Victorious Ones teach it that way from the very beginning? It is the domain of those with deep and vast wisdom and faith. If it were taught to those who are filled with and afflicted by afflictions, it would be no different from nihilism, the continuum of beings would be destroyed, and all pure efforts would be thwarted. Therefore, it should not be taught to everyone, and because it is difficult to understand, it is called the way of secret mantra. Therefore, the minds of those who are attached to things must be gradually guided. For example, a person carried away by water seeks a place to rely on, and grabs the tip of a tree that has fallen into the water. He thinks, 'This tip is very unstable and cannot be relied on. I should quickly abandon it and grab the root to reach land.' So he gradually approaches the root, but the root is washed away by the water. Then he sees that the root has sunk into the water, and the tip has emerged on the surface, so he flees back to the tip. He thinks, 'The root that I thought was stable before is now a sinking abyss. The tip that I thought was unstable is now a refuge and a protector. What should I do now?' So he cuts off the tip and relies on it. He also cuts off the branches, some as dwellings, some as sails when the wind is favorable, some as ballast when the wind is unfavorable, and some as oars, thinking to proceed in this way. Having done so, just as one escapes from the water, so too, those who desire the path of liberation, first observing from the worldly path, see that it only operates on imputed phenomena. Desiring a path and fruit that are free from imputed phenomena, naturally self-arisen, and possessing a nature that is truly non-inverted, they gradually observe and search, but find that all correct observations cannot be established. Then, observing how to proceed, if one clings to what is called 'truth,' then clinging to the ultimate truth is too much. Even if one clings to the nature of truth in the conventional truth,

Seeing the root of one's own bondage, cutting off all correct views with the sword of wisdom, merely abiding in the completely imputed, with skillful means of action, without attachment, dwelling, or bondage to anything, playing and striving as desired with skillful means of action, one will achieve just as a bird flies in the sky. So, what about the completely imputed spoken of by Yogic practitioners? How is it that it is not said to be universally clung to? It is because no one clings to their own established tenets as universally clung to. For a moment, according to its own power, there are two ways of expressing action and object: independent expression and dependent expression. When one of these is established, the other is negated. For example, the agent is an axe and the object is wood; when the wood is split in two, it is a dependent expression, because it cannot be established that the axe cuts itself. When establishing that a lamp illuminates, if it is established dependently, then the illuminator is the lamp, the illuminated is the dark place, and the result of illumination is that the place is freed from darkness. If it is established independently, then the illuminator is also the lamp, the illuminated is also the lamp, and the result of illumination is that the lamp itself continuously arises free from darkness. Whether establishing independently or dependently, it is not permissible to deny that "the agent exists but the object does not." For example, it is not permissible to say that the act of cutting a tree exists but the result of the tree being cut does not, or that the act of illuminating darkness exists but the result of illumination does not. Similarly, it is not permissible to establish that complete imputation exists but the completely imputed does not. However, in that text, only the mode of expressing action and object as dependent on others is refuted. For example, the object to be completely imputed is also dependent, and the agent of complete imputation is also a part of the dependent, which is a distinction of wisdom with discrimination, and has the function of being able to apply terminology. If the completely imputed is established as the nature of the grasper and the grasped, then it is permissible to deny that there is such a completely imputed other than that. Independent
