That which is different from blue is another part besides the substance of the blue cloth. Therefore, when one establishes only the existence of a dharma from the substance of a person, these two parts are reversed. For example, whether one sees blue cloth or green leaves, when the consciousness arises as blue, then one sees its entire nature. There is neither not seeing the other part of the substance, nor seeing the other part of the qualities. This is what is meant by transformation here. Therefore, when one wants the existence of a dharma, if one considers the external object as a substance, then it will become establishing another substance. Just as mentioned above, when one sees blue cloth, apart from the mere appearance of consciousness as blue (there is a note of "apart from" in the Dzogchen Shingpar edition), one will think that the characteristic of the thing itself, that is, the thing with the ability to function, exists as a substance. When one thinks that the external object does not exist as a substance, but considers consciousness as a substance, then one will say this: When one sees blue cloth, according to your wish, there is no substance existing apart from consciousness. However, when consciousness appears as blue, then one will establish that the substance of appearance, that is, the characteristic of the unreal parikalpita, the characteristic that other substances have, can be known. If one does not establish such a view, then merely regarding the appearance of signs as characteristics will not be considered a fault. Furthermore, others argue: If all dharmas are empty of inherent existence, then what is the basis of appearance? What is the basis of illusion? Appearance also needs a basis of appearance, and illusion also needs a basis of illusion, doesn't it? To this, one should say: Even if appearance and illusion have no basis, if the conditions are close, they can appear and be illusory. The contradiction between things is that the basis is not established as a thing. If it is established as a thing in that way, there will be a contradiction. Just like a mirage, it is only an appearance, and the thing is not established from the beginning to the end. Also, if one realizes that the basis is without inherent existence, but immediately mistakes it for a thing, then there will be a contradiction. Even if it is without inherent existence, if one has not realized it in that way and has not become accustomed to it, what contradiction is there? If appearance and illusion do not need a basis, then what are the conditions?

These two become one as the cause of the other. Due to delusion, they appear even though they are not. Because of appearing even though they are not, the mind is deluded. So, which of these two comes first? These are simultaneous. For example, in a dream, when the mind arises that appears as a thing even though the external thing does not exist, at the very first moment when the appearance-consciousness arises that appears as a thing even though the thing does not exist, the mind arises as deluded. At the very first moment when the mind arises as deluded, it arises together with the aspect of appearing as a thing. Therefore, these two are simultaneous. Likewise, all the deluded appearances of beings are mutually simultaneous. So, what is this deluded appearance? Where? From what time is it deluded? Briefly, in terms of mere convention, who is deluded? The sentient beings of the six realms are deluded. Where is it deluded? It is deluded in the three realms of samsara. From what time is it deluded? It is deluded from beginningless time. Thus, it is merely stated in terms of convention, but in reality, it is not so. How is it? The very appearance as place, time, and person is a deluded appearance. For example, in a dream, when a thing appears as a thing even though it does not exist, the distinction of appearance is that one appears to experience happiness and suffering through the way of appearing as place, time, and person. Thus, persons, self and others, reside in a pleasant or unpleasant place, and those who experience happiness or suffering appear to dwell for a long or short time. However, in the very moment of appearance, there is no place, no person, no time, and no happiness or suffering. Yet, even though they do not exist, they appear as if they do. Similarly, beings who are under the control of the sleep of ignorance appear to be in samsara from beginningless time, but their own nature is just one moment of the all-ground consciousness, and yet an infinite world appears. Moreover, it appears as if the image resides in the depths of the mirror or on the surface, but since the mirror has no depths, the image has no different place of residence. Likewise, since the mind has no different place of residence, the world has no size. Time is also like time in a dream.
