This is the direct perception of the Lord of Wisdom, not another direct perception. For example, just as gold is recognized by three methods: burning, cutting, and polishing. By burning, one knows whether it is gold or not. By cutting, one knows whether there is deceit or not. By polishing on a black stone, one knows the quality of the gold. Similarly, the meaning of realization should be determined by comparing it to gold. If it does not contradict the scriptures, there is no error in the general meaning, just as testing gold by burning. However, the scriptures are also explained not literally, and the meaning of the words is led elsewhere, and there are also difficult to understand points. If it does not contradict the instructions of the lamas, such faults can also be eliminated, just as testing gold by cutting. Thus, even if it does not contradict the scriptures and instructions, one may still follow the words literally and not experience it deeply in one's mind. Therefore, without relying solely on the words of the scriptures and instructions, one should have deep conviction in one's mind and realize it directly, thereby eliminating that fault, just as testing gold by polishing. This direct perception is at the time of individual discriminating wisdom, and when it manifests through the power of yoga, it is the result itself. The meaning is brought to completion by three characteristics, that is, the four realizations are taken as the basis, and they are transformed into three characteristics by way of knowing, entering, and manifesting. By this, the meaning of Dzogchen is brought to completion. Therefore, it should be known that it is indispensable to possess these three. The three characteristics show the three necessary connections, which are the necessary connections of the path. That is, it is said: Understanding the manner of the four realizations is the characteristic of knowing, and that is the connection. With what is it connected? It is connected with the meaning of being the cause for attaining unsurpassable Buddhahood. How does one understand the manner of the four realizations? That is, by realizing all that is labeled as fundamental afflictions and purified dharmas in the manner of letters, thereby realizing that the nature of body, speech, and mind is primordially the same, realizing it as the cause of oneness, realizing the realm of self-arisen Buddhahood and blessings, and direct perception.

Through understanding the meaning of words, one understands the meaning of blessings. This is a synonym called "the definition of knowledge." Necessity is the definition of entering. Why is it needed? Because it is the cause and condition for achieving the unsurpassed Buddhahood. The necessity within necessity is the definition of the fruit. What is that? All dharmas are naturally accomplished in the state of great equality from the beginning, without acceptance or rejection. This is the definition of the fruit. And why is that? Because samsara itself is the nature of being enlightened from the beginning, and the definition of nirvana is naturally accomplished. In reality, the inexhaustible wheel of adornment of body, speech, and mind manifests, which is the necessity within necessity. Therefore, it should be combined in this way. If someone says this: the three of cause, condition, and fruit are in accordance with the tenets of the lower vehicles. In the Great Perfection, which is enlightened from the beginning, is there no contradiction in establishing cause, condition, and fruit? In response to this, like Mahāyoga and other lower vehicle tenets, through the limbs of practice (the real cause and condition), they want to accomplish the fruit. But in the state of the Great Perfection, it is not necessary to do so. Because the four practices are perfected in the naturally accomplished yoga without effort, the actual entities of cause, condition, and fruit do not actually exist. Therefore, (meaning naturally accomplished) should be combined into the oral instructions. Among them, the four practices of Mahāyoga are combined in the Great Perfection, which is a little clearer. (That is, like thinking that practice is bodhicitta, etc., or saying that it is not through the present way, etc.) The great practice is the union of skillful means and wisdom, which is related to being combined with bodhicitta. The three of skillful means and wisdom, bodhicitta, the three of father and mother, emanation and sisters, the three of the doors of liberation, emptiness, wishlessness, and signlessness, are originally united and naturally accomplished. Therefore, it should be combined in this way. Subduing the four māras, in general, there are various methods of subduing māras in each tenet. But here, it is through the method of the four limbs of practice that the four māras are subdued.
