As it is proclaimed, the very essence of the ālaya-vijñāna and the appearance of various sentient beings have transformed, abiding in a state free from all appearances, this is called transformation of the basis (āśraya-parāvṛtti). Being free from the defilements of habitual tendencies, this is called the attainment of freedom. Because the images of all uncontaminated dharmas appear, there is no transformation of the basis, this is called self-originated wisdom. This is like a mirror cleansed of tarnish, it is like mirror-like wisdom. Non-abiding is the wisdom of equality. That is, the afflicted mind, connected with the view of self, grasps at places and what is situated, and differentiates between sides and factions. That is, the ālaya-vijñāna, with the continuum connected with habitual tendencies, takes the self as an object by way of inwardly focusing. That is, if both the ālaya-vijñāna and habitual tendencies are not established, because there is no place, cause, or object, the afflicted mind cannot arise either. If it does not arise, there is no other consciousness that grasps at a place. Therefore, the characteristic of non-abiding is naturally the wisdom of equality. According to the common view, the afflicted mind, which constantly views the self, transforms and no longer distinguishes between self and other, but becomes equality, this is called transformation of the basis. Being free from the defilements of self-view and delusion about self, this is called the attainment of freedom. Mirror-like wisdom inwardly observes equally by way of realizing selflessness, so there is no transformation of the basis, this is called self-originated wisdom. Without an object is discriminating wisdom. Thus, the ālaya-vijñāna, habitual tendencies, and afflicted mind are not established, because they are free from all causes, places, and objects. Who would focus on what? Because by nature there is no object, it is discriminating wisdom. According to the common view, the mind consciousness transforms from focusing on the objects of grasping and being grasped in all dharmas, and understands the characteristics of all dharmas as they are, this is called transformation of the basis. Being free from the defilements of clinging to the objects of grasping and being grasped, this is called the attainment of freedom. Just as the mind consciousness focuses on all dharmas, discriminating wisdom also has the ultimate truth and conventional truth as its objects, so there is no transformation of the basis, this is called self-originated wisdom. Without coming and going is accomplishing activity.

This is wisdom. If all the meanings mentioned above are not accomplished, then the five sense consciousnesses cannot arise. Therefore, for external objects, there is no nature of coming and going, so it is the wisdom of accomplishing activities. According to the common saying, the attachment of the five sense consciousnesses to external objects disappears, and it is naturally accomplished in the inconceivable great compassion, so it is called transformation of the basis. It is free from the defilement of distraction to external objects, so it is the attainment of freedom from defilement. Just as the five senses look outward, the wisdom of accomplishing activities also observes the faculties of the beings to be tamed, and there is no transformation of the basis, so it is called self-arisen wisdom. These self-arisen wisdoms also do not abandon the nature of consciousness and the arising of their own objects, and they continue to be accomplished in the same way at the time of wisdom, so it is said to be the aspect of establishment. Not only that, because the grasper and the grasped do not exist at all, all consciousnesses are established as only self-awareness, which is also self-arisen wisdom. Self-awareness itself is also elaboration, so all elaborations have not been established since the beginning, and obscurations have been pure since the beginning, because the nature is luminous, so it is called self-arisen wisdom. Among them, the so-called mind of original enlightenment is spoken from the uncommon aspect. The nature of wisdom that I have spoken is to make it easy for listeners and those with shallow wisdom to understand, so I have briefly explained it in conjunction with common sayings. At this time, the Umapa school's teachers also explain by combining the five bodies and the five wisdoms. The Umapa Kagyu school also explains by combining the ultimate fruition, the state of Buddhahood, and the state of yogis. How the ultimate mind is wisdom from the beginning, and how it is accomplished for those who have realized it, merely explaining these seems to include all of these contents, so I have not written those treatises. Now I want to explain the arising of conventional bodhicitta. First, because the meaning of the Dharma of being enlightened from the beginning is difficult to understand, in order to explain that one wanders in samsara because of not understanding it, I have said, "Emaho, the secret Dharma from the beginning," etc. Although it is the meaning of being enlightened from the beginning, because it has not been understood from the beginning, so from the beginning
