is the gate for fully entering the Great Bodhi, therefore the four gates are taught. The eight liberations are: As it is said, the samadhi of seeing forms with form, etc., if it is grasped by the liberation of skillful means, it becomes the path to the Great Bodhi, therefore it is the eight stirrups. Why is it called a stirrup? It is called "Tarana" (Tibetan: ཏྭ་ར་ན་, Sanskrit Devanagari: तरण, Sanskrit Romanization: taraṇa, literal Chinese meaning: manifest hanging), meaning manifest hanging, these ornaments do not depend on the surface, but exist as if hanging from empty space, therefore it is called stirrup because of hanging. Another saying is that it is without affliction, because these are shown as signs of being without affliction, therefore it is called that. Another saying is "Tarangtagammana" (Tibetan: ཏྭ་རིང་ཏ་འགམ་མན་ན་), meaning the matter of the horse, whoever enters the palace, these are the steps of the stirrup, so it is said to be the stirrup. These differences in cushions are also said to be the nature of the Mahayana, as it is said in the Sutra: 'What does he ride, that can remove the sorrows of all sentient beings.' It also says: 'This vehicle is like the sky, it is a great immeasurable palace.' And so on. In some treatises, the Bhagavan Great Vairocana Buddha is shown to be seated on the lion throne of the bodies of the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas. Here, it is meant that everything is a mandala without others, so it is not the time to explain such treatises. The word Mahayana also includes the path, the result, the ultimate truth, and the collection of treatises, so the symbols should also be matched accordingly. Among them, the Mahayana can suppress all the lower vehicles and is not afraid of their refutations, so its symbol is the fearless lion throne. In addition, the Mahayana can accommodate and carry everything that does not belong to other vehicles, so it is the elephant throne. Similarly, this can quickly mature and liberate all those to be tamed, so it is the horse throne. This can control afflictions and karma without abandoning them, so it is the peacock throne. It can tame all those to be tamed with various activities without attachment or hindrance, so it is the Garuda throne. Also, according to the principle of secret mantra,

It is through empowerment that one proceeds, and even after attaining the state, one abides in the nature of complete empowerment. Therefore, the throne becomes the mudra of empowerment. During the time of empowerment, thrones are arranged in order, and during the time of the assembly mandala, according to the order of those who have and have not received empowerment, some have cushions marked with a lion and vajra, and similarly, in order, lotus, jewel, sun, half-moon, and personal inner cushions, etc., are said to be arranged in order. The yogi Sugata himself, during the time of empowerment, also said this: "The king of great joy attains bliss, the lion's seat is excellently placed, with the excellence of four and four, empowerment is bestowed by guiding them." As it is said, the throne is shown as the mudra of empowerment. By obtaining the empowerment of listening to this, one becomes endowed with the fortune of hearing all the scriptures. One obtains fearlessness and intrepidity towards the views, practices, and vows that are the companions of all vehicles. Therefore, the mudra is the fearless lion throne. Similarly, by obtaining the empowerment of meditation and practice, one possesses the power and strength to accomplish all that needs to be accomplished, hence the elephant throne. By obtaining the empowerment of teaching, one liberates the minds of those to be tamed and possesses miracles, hence the horse throne. By obtaining the empowerment of the vajra king, one has mastery over all, hence the peacock throne. By obtaining the empowerment of action, one has no obstacles in performing the deeds of benefiting beings, hence the garuda throne. The signs of the qualities of great fruit are shown as follows: As it is said: "The body subdues the four maras with the four fearlessnesses, as a sign of its accomplishment, it sits on the lion throne. The mind tames the ten non-virtues with the ten powers, as a sign of its accomplishment, it sits on the elephant throne. The qualities go unimpeded with the four miraculous legs, as a sign of its accomplishment, it sits on the excellent horse throne. The speech is the manner of the victorious one who has perfected power, as a sign of its accomplishment, it sits on the peacock throne. The action liberates the four births with the four kinds of activity, as a sign of its accomplishment, it sits on the garuda throne." As it is said, that is the occasion when the body is shown as the main thing, while here the mind is shown as the main thing.
