The vows known as "Namong," namely the Pratimoksha vows and the Bodhisattva vows, are also considered the basis for the Secret Mantra vows. The vows common to all deities, such as the vows of the Five Families (Buddha, Vajra, Ratna, Padma, and Karma), are also considered common protections when pleasing a deity of one family. The vows that yogis should generally observe at all times and in all circumstances are: the Samayas that belong to the root and branches (in the Dzogchen woodblock print, it is "realization"), the Samayas of conduct, and the Samayas of constancy, and so on. These are the divisions belonging to the common Samayas. The special Samayas are: the individual Samayas that yogis observe according to their different intellectual abilities, as well as the Samayas of conduct, the Samayas of view, and the Samayas of wisdom. Similarly, the gatherings, the Buddha-ground, the activities, the practice, the status of vidyadharas, and the places of transgression exist in a special order. Such are called the Samayas of special abilities. The enhanced Samayas are: when a yogi abiding in the common vows is engaged in great practices and other special occasions, the emphasis is on enhanced protection, such as not destroying the body of a lion, not collecting the remains abandoned by leopards, not drinking glacial meltwater, not removing the vajra armor, and so on, which are commonly known in the general scriptures. Among these, in this tantra, there are five root Samayas that serve as protection and practice, and ten branches that are not to be abandoned, making a total of fifteen Samayas. This is said to be like a wish-fulfilling jewel, the source of all needs, like the foundation for upholding all trainings, like the life force of all virtues. Because the Buddhas in the tantras have taught the Samayas, it is taught as the foundation for the great ones to accomplish the kingdom of Dharma. This should be understood. Sadhana is: through the characteristic of pleasing the deities of mantra, it becomes the means of accomplishing common and supreme siddhis, encompassing both approach and accomplishment, and the four branches.
