Therefore, unsurpassed perfect enlightenment does not arise in the minds of those who, as Hearers, have abandoned afflictions and realized the unconditioned. Rather, it is by generating a view of the aggregates as substantial as Mount Meru that one will generate the mind of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Therefore, afflictions are the lineage of the Tathagata. So it is said. In the principles of Secret Mantra, it is also said: Afflictions themselves are naturally pure, therefore they cannot be abandoned. The five afflictions themselves are the lineage, nature, and activity of the five Buddha families. Similarly, the five Buddhas are also the lineage and nature of the five afflictions. Therefore, Buddhahood cannot be attained by abandoning afflictions, because the five afflictions are, from the very beginning, the five Buddhas themselves, as explained in detail above in the section on the five Buddha families. Therefore, if one understands the nature of afflictions, from the perspective of both ultimate truth and conventional truth, they are Buddhahood itself. What is there to abandon? They should always be relied upon and practiced. Not abandoning them because they are seized by skillful means is also explained in the principles of the Paramita Vehicle: For example, the ashes, manure, and filth of farmers are beneficial to rice fields or sesame fields. Similarly, the afflictions of Bodhisattvas are beneficial to unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. So it is said. For example, attachment is the characteristic of clinging to and being particularly attached to the five aggregates of appropriation. If this were absent, even giving alms would not become a collection of merit. Similarly, discipline and patience would not become a great collection. For example, even giving is said to be: That which is difficult to give away completely is said to be supreme. And so on. Patience is also said to be: Even if limbs are cut off by one with attachment, not being disturbed is the perfection of patience. And so on. Furthermore, if there is no attachment, the view of the aggregates as substantial will not arise. If there is no clinging to self and what belongs to self, courage will not arise. Therefore, for those who have a view of the aggregates as substantial as Mount Meru, courage as substantial as Mount Meru will arise.

Those individuals who generate strength like Mount Meru, when they generate the mind, they say, "I alone shall liberate and free all sentient beings who are boundless in the expanse of space, I shall relieve their suffering, I shall completely deliver them from sorrow." Furthermore, Bodhisattvas, having perfected their bodies through aspiration in all lifetimes, when they work for the benefit of all sentient beings, if they are not moistened by the moisture of afflictions, there is no way to manifestly accomplish the sprout of existence. Therefore, this should not be abandoned. Those who have entered the Great Vehicle should regard afflictions as like parents and virtuous spiritual friends. In the way of Secret Mantra, it is also said: "A disease completely seized by mantra cannot harm all. Likewise, when seized by skillful means, the three poisons and suffering cannot harm." And so forth. Such a thing as afflictions not harming is common to Bodhisattvas. How then, in the way of Secret Mantra, do afflictions benefit? It is said: "Subdue the world without attachment. The accomplishment of mudra arises from attachment." It is also said that when pleasing the Tathagatas, the object of mind is desire, and that when pleasing the family of the Tathagatas, attachment is necessary. How then does the accomplishment of mudra arise from attachment? The accomplishment of mudra is also of two kinds, namely, that which is known as the way of external yogis and that which is known as the way of internal yogis. According to the external way, if one does not generate attachment to the mudras that are said to be deities contemplated by beings who possess vows, one will not attain accomplishment. According to the internal way, if one does not generate intense attachment to the mudra of dharani, one will not be able to accomplish it through the activity of wisdom and accomplishment. Therefore, there are times when it is not permissible not to rely on attachment itself. These and other afflictions are both the condition for the qualities of virtue and the condition for the faults of error. Therefore, one must distinguish the specific characteristics of this common condition.
