Having become the first Indra, there is not even a moment to arise attachment and clinging to the wealth of a Chakravartin. Gyaltsab Jampa said: Gods have death and transference, humans have universal seeking and suffering, in order to realize this truth. Wise people do not envy even the highest power of gods and humans. Because they have wisdom and the scriptures of the Tathagata, followers of faith. Because they know that this is suffering, this is the cause of suffering, this is the cessation of suffering, so they can see it. So it is said. Third, the explanation of the path common to great individuals is divided into two parts: entering the path through refuge, and the main practice of generating Bodhicitta. The first part is: From then on, take refuge. It is said that through these stages of the path, without wasting the leisure and endowment, but quickly generating the mind of definite renunciation that desires to be liberated from the three realms. By one's own strength alone, not to mention the fear of samsara, even the fear of this life cannot be overcome, which is established by प्रमाण (pramāṇa, Validity). Therefore, in order to be able to protect from that, one must take refuge in the refuge. The objects of refuge are the Three Jewels of Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, the Three Roots of Guru, Yidam, and Dakini, and the retinue of Dharma Protectors and Wisdom Deities. Having abandoned all the faults of one's own wrongdoings, liberated from the bonds of existence and peace, and possessing immeasurable qualities, therefore able to protect others, so they are seen with the certainty of knowing the reasons that they are eternally infallible and constant refuges. The intention is that oneself and all other sentient beings, parents who pervade the sky, in order to quickly transcend and liberate from the great fear of samsara. From now until the attainment of great enlightenment. With proper body, speech, and mind, respectfully, praying with speech, and with single-minded devotion in mind, take refuge. To explain this meaning slightly, there are seven points. First, the reason for taking refuge is: Jowo Rinpoche said: All vows are present, but without refuge there are none. As it is said, just as the foundation of all Buddhist vows is indispensable, the difference between inner and outer paths lies in whether or not there is refuge, and without relying on these refuges, there is no way to be liberated from samsara.

Regarding the objects [of refuge]: The objects of the causal refuge are the Three Jewels, which are included in the streams of others. The Three Jewels are viewed differently in the Lesser and Greater Vehicles. In this system of the unsurpassed Great Vehicle, the Buddha is the essence of the four kayas and five wisdoms, possessing twofold purity and being perfect in the two aims. The Dharma is the truth of stainless purity, included in the object to be expressed, cessation and path, and the scriptures that express it, appearing as words, phrases, and letters, both scriptural and realized. The Sangha are those who dwell on the level of noble bodhisattvas, possessing the qualities of knowledge and liberation, as well as the fellow practitioners of the accumulations and joining, and the noble shravakas and pratyekabuddhas. In mantra, in addition to that, the special objects of refuge are the guru, the source of blessings; the yidam, the source of siddhis; and the dakinis and dharma protectors, the companions in accomplishing activities. The guru is the embodiment of all the jewels, the yidam is the Buddha, and the dakinis and dharma protectors are the Sangha. However, they are emphasized and taken as objects of refuge. The object of the resultant refuge is one's own mind, the unity of emptiness and clarity, abiding in the essence of essence, nature, and compassion, which is the very nature of the Three Jewels. Moreover, taking refuge by vowing to the objects of refuge for the sake of accomplishing the result is the causal refuge. Entering the cause in order to manifest the Buddha within one's own mind, or primarily abiding in oneself as spontaneously present without seeking elsewhere, is the resultant refuge. As it is said in Yeshe Drubpa: In the lord of the Three Jewels, Desiring perfect bliss elsewhere, Why aspire to the cause? The mind of clear light Is the nature of the three mandalas. Having realized this, to rest in single-pointed equipoise Is truly taught as the supreme result. So it is. Third, the way to take refuge is as it appears in the individual instructions on visualization and meditation, and the way of thinking, the time, and the manner of acting are as explicitly taught in the texts. Fourth, the way in which they protect is that the Buddha is the ultimate refuge and teacher. Because one practices the meaning he taught and is liberated from fear, the Dharma is the path. The Sangha are the companions who lead the way, and in this way they protect. The guru of secret mantra is the one who accomplishes the activities of the Three Jewels, so he is the embodiment of all of them. As it says in the Domjung: The guru is the Buddha, the guru is the Dharma, Likewise, the guru is the Sangha.
