That is karma. As the "Cloud of Jewels Sutra" says, "Whether virtuous or non-virtuous, all karmas are accumulated by the mind." Therefore, one should always strive to guard one's mind. The way to do this is as Shantideva said, "For those who wish to guard their minds, mindfulness and awareness are essential. With all effort, guard these. I join my palms in reverence." As it is said, one should always cultivate mindfulness, which does not forget to guard the mind, awareness, which discerns whether faults have arisen or not in one's own mindstream, and diligence, which is cautious about the circumstances of engaging in or refraining from any action. Secondly, the stages of the path common to the intermediate person are twofold: the method of training the mind and the measure of accomplishment. The first is: "Generate again and again from the special." As it is said, although the understandings common to the lesser person are correct views, what is more special than that is the thought of definitely emerging from all samsara in order to accomplish the supreme state of liberation and peace, which is very important. The characteristic of samsara is as the Vinayavibhaṅga says: "In the impure there is no fragrance, likewise in the six realms there is no happiness, in a burning pit there is no coolness, and in existence there is no joy." Thus, no matter where one is born in the higher or lower realms of existence, it is like dwelling naked in a pit of burning embers, or walking barefoot through a field of sharp razors, or climbing naked through a forest of swords, which is only the nature of suffering. The nature of samsara is as the sutra says: "Beings, under the power of craving, existence, and ignorance, wander in the three realms of humans, gods, and evil destinies, circling unskillfully in the five realms, like a potter's wheel." Thus, one revolves without beginning or end, so one must first understand this principle, and then be urged on by constant and unforgetting mindfulness. The suffering of samsara can be summarized into three: the suffering of suffering, which is that generally, merely taking the five aggregates of appropriation is the nature of suffering, and on top of that, great suffering manifests, like a boil appearing on top of leprosy. The main examples are the hot and cold hells, the hunger and thirst of the pretas, and the stupidity and dumbness of animals. Humans have eight sufferings, and gods and asuras also have the suffering of desire.

Greed and strife are also included. The suffering of change is: all the happiness and prosperity of samsara are impermanent and changing by nature, such as the sudden destruction of a comfortable dwelling by illness or enemies. Like the gods and humans who seem to live in happiness, they do not remain stable for long and change and depart. The pervasive suffering of conditioning is: all the phenomena of samsara, which are included in the five aggregates, arise and cease in an instant. Ordinary people do not realize this, but in the eyes of the noble ones, they are always changing, so they are suffering. The Abhidharmakosha commentary says: A single hair on the palm of the hand, when it enters the eye, causes discomfort and pain. Children are like the palm of the hand, unable to perceive the hair of the suffering of conditioning. The noble ones are like the eye, seeing the suffering in conditioning. Therefore, now that diseases and enemies seem to be suffering, even for a moment, the body and mind cannot bear it. Then, in the place of samsara, there is no beginning or end, and there is no courage to endure the constant association with those three great sufferings. Think carefully about the reasons, and want to quickly escape from them.
