In the excellent Za Ma Tok it says: The initial practitioner, in order to calm and subdue the mind, should dwell in solitude. Thus it is said. Second is: From a comfortable seat, think like this, it is said. In a secluded cave or meditation room, sitting on a comfortable and flat cushion allows for prolonged sitting. Keeping the body upright allows the channels and winds to naturally settle, reducing distractions and delusions. Expelling impure air three times clears the impurities of afflictions from the channels. Praying to the Three Jewels so that the sacred Dharma may be perfected will prevent obstacles. To the Lama, generate devotion by seeing them as the Buddha, blessings will enter the three doors. Keeping mindfulness in its natural state, not stolen by circumstances, will clarify the meaning of meditation. Therefore, as said above, practice accordingly and contemplate the methods of mind training in this way. Second, the preliminaries of guidance are three: the path common to the lesser person, common to the middling person, and common to the great person. The first has three: the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowment, impermanence of death, and contemplating karma and its results. The first is: If leisure and endowment are not diligently used, it is said. This has four points: the nature of the support, the reasons for its difficulty to obtain, the importance of obtaining it, and the exhortation to extract its essence. The first is: Leisure, which is freedom from the eight unfree states, is the nature of the support. The five personal endowments, such as having a good appearance, and the five circumstantial endowments, such as being clarified by the distinctions of appearances, are its special qualities, that is, this precious human body adorned with such perfect qualities is an indispensable support for accomplishing enlightenment. Among them, the eight unfree states are: As it is said: Hell beings, hungry ghosts, and animals, barbarians, long-lived gods, and those with wrong views, where Buddhas do not appear, the mute, these are the eight unfree states. And, the five personal endowments are: Being human, born in the central land, having complete faculties, not having transgressed the limits of karma, and having faith in the place. And, the five circumstantial endowments are: A Buddha has appeared and taught the Dharma, the teachings abide and one practices accordingly, and having compassion for others. Thus it appears. Second, from the perspective of cause, it is difficult to obtain: If one accumulates vast virtuous deeds such as upholding morality and connects them with aspirations, then leisure and endowment

Even if leisure is obtained. Shantideva said: With actions like mine, even a human body will not be obtained. If a human body is not obtained, there is only sin and no virtue. As it is said, accumulating merit is rare. From the perspective of analogy, it is also difficult to obtain. The basis of leisure is like the Udumbara flower. Then, it is said that the Buddha appears in the world, and even after a hundred paths, it is equally rare. Furthermore, like a yoke hole floating in the great ocean, with a turtle's neck entering it, it is said that a human body is extremely difficult to obtain. Just like that. Considering the number, it is also difficult to obtain. Hell is like the dust of the earth, hungry ghosts are like blizzards, animals are like distiller's grains, and gods and humans are like the dust on fingernails, as stated in the sutras. Third, relying on the boat of the human body, one can be liberated from the river of suffering. This boat is difficult to obtain later, so foolish people should not sleep when the time is ripe. As it is said, relying on the boat of the human body, one can transcend the ocean of suffering of samsara. If one is skilled in mastering the method of obtaining the jewel of ultimate benefit, then this difficult-to-obtain attainment is even more precious than a poor person obtaining a wish-fulfilling jewel. Chandragomin said: Having obtained that which can exhaust the ocean of samsara, and can sow the seeds of supreme Bodhi, who, having obtained a human body, would render it meaningless, which has more merit than a wish-fulfilling jewel? As it is said. Fourth, because one has obtained something that is difficult to obtain and has great meaning once obtained, at all times and in all circumstances, one should rely on a virtuous friend who can correctly guide one in extracting the essence from leisure, and a friend who has virtuous views and conduct. The Letter to a Friend says: Relying on a virtuous friend is celibacy. The perfect teacher said this, therefore, one should rely on a virtuous friend. Having relied on a virtuous friend, one can obtain a great deal of peace. As it is said. Conversely, those evil friends who lead one's mind to the path of non-virtue, thereby wasting leisure, should be abandoned. The Mindfulness Sutra says: Greed and
