Therefore, one should properly examine and then rely upon [a qualified teacher] from the very beginning. For example, when entering an unfamiliar path, one needs a guide who knows the way; when going to a dangerous place, one needs a strong escort; when crossing to the other side of the water, one cannot do without the help of a boatman. Although the qualities of a teacher are extensively discussed in the sutras, tantras, and pith instructions, to summarize: the foundation of all qualities is the three vows; the vows and conduct of the vows, as they have been taken, are not tainted by faults and downfalls, so the mindstream is completely pure, having abandoned all that is blameworthy; having heard many sutras, tantras, transmissions, and pith instructions of both sutra and tantra, one is not ignorant of anything, and is greatly adorned with a way of life that is free from bias; having ascertained the meaning of what has been heard through reflection, one distinguishes the details of the six extremes and four modes; having applied its meaning to the mindstream through meditation, the qualities of experience and realization increase like the waxing moon, and one possesses the signs of warmth that elevate the grounds and paths, thus accomplishing one's own benefit through the three doors of hearing, thinking, and meditating. The power of immaculate wisdom that arises from these increases, and without regard for gain, respect, or fame, with the compassionate activity of impartial compassion, one lovingly guides fortunate disciples. Moreover, one is able to cut through superimpositions and deprecations with verbal instructions, able to generate realization with introductions to the meaning, able to prevent impure appearances with the power of blessings, able to eliminate obstacles to practice, and able to enhance the benefits of realization. In short, one possesses all the good qualities of wisdom, compassion, and ability, and spontaneously accomplishes the benefit of others. The scriptural authority for relying on a virtuous friend from the beginning is also found in the *Arrayed Tree Sutra*: 'Omniscience depends on the instructions of a virtuous friend.' And in the *Compendium Sutra*: 'The Buddhas and their teachings rely on virtuous friends, the Victorious Ones have said, possessing the supreme of all qualities.' And in the *Mother Sutra*: 'Bodhisattvas who wish to fully awaken to perfect enlightenment should, from the very beginning, attend to virtuous friends, rely on them, and respect them.' And as it is said: 'Without grasping a vessel, one cannot cross to the other shore by boat. Even if all qualities are perfectly complete, without a lama, one will not reach the end of samsara.' And so forth, there are endless scriptures, reasoning, and examples.

It is said. The second is, from "Three Pleasures" to "Taking the Vow": It means that after finding a qualified teacher with those characteristics, how to rely on the teacher is also described in the Ornament of Sutras: "One should rely on the teacher through acquisition, respect, service, and practice." Like that, it is best to practice the meaning of the oral instructions and act according to the teachings, which is the service of practice; the intermediate is to serve with body, speech, and mind as much as possible; the lowest is to offer all one's possessions and show respect, that is, through the three kinds of pleasure. Regard the teacher as a wish-fulfilling jewel, a doctor who revives the dead, and the essence of one's heart, and rely on him with unwavering devotion and respect. Do not engage in any action, even for a moment, that would displease the teacher with body, speech, and mind, including any actions that are considered inappropriate or expected to be improved. Since the profound Dharma and the conduct of holy beings are difficult to fathom, one should be skilled in learning the path of liberation of the three secrets properly through intelligence and memory. See everything the teacher does as good and everything he says as true, and follow his teachings accordingly, repeatedly taking firm vows that cannot be taken away by any circumstances, and put them into practice. As it is said in the Gathering Sutra: "Son of good family, the teacher should be regarded by all the Tathagatas and Bodhisattvas as the mind of enlightenment, like a vajra." And in the Self-Arisen Sutra: "Thus rely on the secret mantra teacher, serve him with one's own body and precious wealth, and with extremely rare things." And in the Sutra: "If one can please the virtuous friend, one will attain the enlightenment of all the Buddhas." As mentioned above, it is difficult to find a teacher who possesses all the qualities due to the times. Even if one is found, because sentient beings with impure self-appearance see others as having faults, it is necessary to emphasize the virtues. As it is said in the Sutra of True Intimacy: "In the degenerate age, the teacher has both faults and virtues. It is impossible to find someone who has no faults in any aspect. If a teacher has more virtues, then the disciples should carefully observe and rely on him." Just like the sutra says. The third is, what is expressed from "He also" to "of the disciple": possessing
