It is said to abide with five special qualities, namely: its essence is uncompounded; its abiding manner is the natural state of clarity, emptiness, and awareness; it has never been deluded from the beginning and has transcended liberation in the end; it is utterly peaceful as it is free from the characteristics of arising, ceasing, and other elaborations, like the sky; and it abides and remains without any distinction between samsara and nirvana, distinguishing and distancing them with faults, or cherishing and drawing near to them as virtues. The word "kyang" is a particle that gathers the following words. To explain its meaning slightly, the reason why the Sugata-garbha is the basis of all knowable things is stated in the Sutra of Abhidharma: "The realm of beginningless time is the abode of all phenomena; because of it, all beings and nirvana are attained." This means that the realm of beginningless time itself, without distinguishing between pure and impure, is established as the abode or basis of all phenomena of samsara and nirvana. If distinguished, the adventitious defilements dependent on the alaya-consciousness are the cause of contaminated samsara, and the essence of the alaya, the Sugata-garbha, is the cause of uncontaminated nirvana. The noble Nagarjuna said: "Whatever becomes the cause of samsara, when that is purified, that purity itself is nirvana, and the Dharmakaya is also the same." These two also exist in the manner of a support and what is supported, as the protector Maitreya explained with examples such as "earth depends on water, water on wind." In the scriptures, these two are explained with many terms such as phenomena and suchness, extremes and the middle, appearance and emptiness, conventional and ultimate. Thus, the basis of distinction, the all-pervading Sugata-garbha, is clarified by the distinguishing qualities such as being uncompounded. Moreover, the way in which that realm pervades everything is stated in the Uttaratantra: "Just as the nature of non-discrimination, like the sky, goes everywhere, so the stainless realm of the mind's nature goes everywhere." Just as the general characteristic of the sky naturally pervades all forms of high, low, and intermediate, so the characteristic of the realm naturally pervades all phenomena. Furthermore, it is taught that the realm is indicated by three names according to the way it enters: in the case of sentient beings obscured by adventitious defilements, it is the lineage; the Buddha, free from defilements,

In the chapter on the ground, the Dharmakaya. From the aspect of pervading the nature of both and being immutable, it is called Suchness. Its nature is the Dharmakaya, Suchness, and also the lineage. Thus it is said. In that space, from the sutras of the intermediate turning of the wheel, it is taught with terms such as emptiness and Suchness. In the Compendium, it says: The past Suchness, the future Suchness. The present Suchness, the Arhat's Suchness. All dharmas are Suchness, the Victor's Suchness. All these dharmas' Suchness is without any difference. And so on, and in the Root Wisdom: Whatever is the nature of the Tathagata, is the nature of these beings. And so on, the meaning of the emptiness of the reality of things is explained limitlessly. In the final turning of the wheel and so on, the Tathagatagarbha is extensively taught. As in the Samadhiraja Sutra: Pure, clear, luminous, unmoving, uncompounded nature, is the Tathagatagarbha, the Dharma-nature that has always been present. And so on, and in the profound tantric scriptures, it is taught with many names such as E-Vam (ཨེ་ཝྃ་, एवं, evaṃ, thus), Vajrasattva, and continuum, bindu, immutable, luminous, self-arisen wisdom. As in the Hevajra Tantra: The essence of all Buddhas is perfectly abiding in the letter E-Vam (ཨེ་ཝྃ་, एवं, evaṃ, thus). Thus it is said. In the Sambhuta Tantra: Great wisdom abides in the body, completely abandoning all thoughts, the body abides, not born from the body. Thus it is said. In the Guhyasamaja Tantra: Lineage is said to be continuum, continuum is said to be the first, whatever is indestructible and unborn, is said to be the protector. Thus it is said. The common scriptural authority for believing that the Tathagatagarbha resides in sentient beings is, as the sutra says: All sentient beings possess the Tathagatagarbha. Thus it is said. The Tathagatagarbha pervades all beings, all these beings are the cause of Buddhahood. Thus it is said. Shariputra, the term "ultimate meaning" is a synonym for the realm of sentient beings. The term "realm of sentient beings" is a synonym for the Tathagatagarbha. The term "Tathagatagarbha" is a synonym for the Dharmakaya. And so on, and the special scriptural authority is, in the Hevajra Tantra: This itself is great wisdom, all constantly abides in the body, real and unreal.
