That is, by blending the sound of Hūṃ (Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हूं, Romanized Sanskrit: hūṃ, literal Chinese meaning: 吽) with the wind and mind, concentrate all the points where diseases ache into the form of a single Hūṃ (Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हूं, Romanized Sanskrit: hūṃ, literal Chinese meaning: 吽) syllable. Then, directly expel the pain from the body in the form of Hūṃ (Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हूं, Romanized Sanskrit: hūṃ, literal Chinese meaning: 吽), visualizing it dissolving into the distance. Repeatedly clear the breath, and relinquish the clinging of thinking you know something, settling into a state of natural ease. Secondly, 'Pray from the obstacles,' it is said. The method for eliminating the obstacles of the demonic deities, spirits, and obstructive forces that hinder the attainment of liberation is as follows: The general demons are the four Māras—the Kleśa-māra, Skandha-māra, Mṛtyu-māra, and Devaputra-māra—and the retinue of the god-demons, the thirty-six pretas belonging to the retinue of the demon class such as the four great continents, and the countless multitudes of demons. The specific demons include external demons such as misleading spirits, internal demons such as discursive thoughts and distractions, and secret demons such as pride in accomplishments. Each of these has six divisions, totaling eighteen, as stated in the Ratnakūṭa Sūtra. If these are summarized, the inherent nature of the three poisons—anger, desire, and ignorance—manifests as male, female, and non-binary variations, as well as the obstructing forces of misleading spirits and the great demons of hindrance, all of which are included within these three. Regardless of whether they appear good or bad, or how their actions and miraculous powers manifest, in reality, they are not established in the slightest, as they are without foundation. For example, it is like one's own shadow transforming into a flesh-eating rākṣasa, causing fear and dread. The nature of demons and obstacles is as follows: Śāntideva said, 'Whatever harm exists in the world, and whatever fear and suffering there may be, all arise from clinging to the self. So what can the great demon do to me?' As it is said, the root of everything is this mind that clings to the self. That is because one has not recognized the inherent nature that is primordially present in the union of clarity and emptiness, and the aspect of clarity is lost to the outside, becoming an object to be grasped. From this arises the consciousness that grasps, and due to the increasing coarseness of self-grasping, the aspect of clarity becomes anger, the aspect of emptiness becomes desire, and the nature of union becomes ignorance. From this, eighty-four thousand afflictions arise, and the self-nature of these afflictions is the appearance of insubstantial, adventitious images appearing limitlessly. Therefore, one's own mind is called a demon. One's own mind is an obstacle. So it is said. There are many causes for entering.

I mainly say that (demons) arise from diligent practice. The Sutra of Manjushri's Transformations says: The deeds of demons of Bodhisattvas should be understood as arising from diligence. Why is that? Because what can demons do to those who are not diligent? Because he himself is a demon. So it is said. The immediate cause of entry is: From beginningless time, the habit of clinging to self-grasping, relying on subtle causes, gives rise to various kinds of delusions, as stated in the Sutra of Akashagarbha: Just as wind enters from a hole, demons enter the yogi's mind wherever there is a fault, and find an opportunity. Therefore, Bodhisattvas should be free from the faults of afflictions. So it is said. Regarding the signs of demonic blessings and the scope of activities, the detailed explanations of demonic activities, etc., it is very important to understand from the sutras and other treatises. The method of eliminating these is that the superior yogi cuts off the root of where the outwardly appearing demonic obstacles arise in the mind, and determines that the self-mind is grasped as a ghost, and it is not truly established in the external environment. Observing the nature of grasping ghosts, one realizes that it is separated from the three of arising, ceasing, and abiding, so that the false cave of delusion collapses on its own, the path of discrimination is cut off, the causes of hope and fear, and suffering are all fundamentally pacified, bad omens fall into the cliff, and the sun of inner peace arises. Even so, if the illusion cannot be cut off, or the intermediate yogi deliberately summons demonic obstacles, visualizes them as offerings of the five aggregates of desire and offers them. Giving the body as food, and unreservedly abandoning self-cherishing. Also, without the slightest arrogance of delusion, no matter what happens, let it be, sleeping fearlessly in terrifying charnel grounds and places where fierce ghosts and gods gather, etc., wherever they like, so that all the demands of illusion become the degree of maturity and severance, and obstacles are transformed into the supreme of realization. The subsequent attainment of these and the inferior yogi know the demonic obstacles as parents, generate intense love and compassion, and in order to place them on the ground of Buddhahood, vow to diligently practice, especially generate the mind of wanting Bodhi, practice the giving and receiving of self-other exchange, and the vast aspirations in accordance with the Mahayana path.
