Bondage, and suffering is one's own suffering, without a protector, and constantly fearing being killed by others, and before dying, being eaten and drunk of flesh and blood by others, and so on, animals also have various kinds of creepy suffering. These scattered animals that rely on humans have the least suffering. The vast majority of animals that dwell in places exist in the outer ocean and so on, and it is said that their suffering is extremely great. It is said that the cause of being born there is not fearing small sins. If one is born in five places such as remote border areas, because there is no Dharma, in the next life one can only go to the lower realms, and it is said that if one is born there, one will experience the suffering of the three lower realms as before. The Teacher Incarnate said: Although one speaks of the happiness of the heavens, in comparison to the suffering of the three lower realms, one speaks of the happiness of the heavens only considering that the suffering is slightly less. In reality, even in the heavens themselves there is no happiness, only suffering. Humans have various sufferings such as birth, old age, sickness, and death. Among these, the first is the suffering of birth: First, when the alaya consciousness is wrapped in the sperm and blood of the parents, one feels as if entering a dark island, or feels as if being pressed under a huge mountain. Then, when the body takes shape and wriggles, when the mother is full, one feels as if being squeezed between rocks; when the mother is hungry, one feels as if being hung up; when the mother moves violently, one feels as if being squeezed between rocks. Then, at the time of birth, it is like being squeezed out from between rocks; when falling to the ground, one feels like being skinned and thrown into a thorn bush, or feels like being trampled by hooves, the suffering is extremely great. From then on, until one is young, there is hunger, thirst, pain in the hands and feet, and it is extremely painful. Afterwards, even when one grows up, there are various sufferings of searching exhaustedly for something that does not exist and not finding it; and various sufferings of fearing that what one has will be stolen or robbed; and various sufferings of fearing encountering enemies; and various sufferings of fearing separation from loved ones; and the suffering of conditioned existence, merely taking this aggregate is a huge burden of suffering.

Unable to endure heat, unable to endure cold, unable to endure hunger, unable to endure thirst, and so on, there are various kinds of suffering, it is said. Then there are various sufferings of old age. Due to aging and weakness, all the senses and physical abilities are lost. When walking, one staggers. When standing, one is unable to stand up. The crown of the head is bald, and the black body is covered with spots of dust. Because of the increase in white hair and wrinkles, one is displeasing to everyone. One will become a laughingstock for the children of the neighborhood, it is said. There are various unbearable sufferings of illness. Whichever of the five senses of the body is afflicted, such as if the eyes are sick, one thinks, 'If it were not the eyes but something else that was sick, it would be better.' Nothing can be endured. The radiance of the body diminishes. The senses and strength decline. Eventually, wealth, grain, and great possessions are exhausted, which is extremely painful. The suffering of death is such that at the time of death, it feels like being cut with a knife by the suffering of severing the vital points at the time of death. The body is weak, the mind is unclear, the warmth is low, and one does not know how to gather the breath, it is said. Guru Rinpoche said: 'The suffering of death is even more terrifying than the suffering of hell.' The emanation teacher said: 'It is said that there is perfect bliss in the pure land of Lotus Born, but even there, one does not transcend the nature of suffering. Gods and Asuras suffer from fighting. Throwing jeweled mountains back and forth, and killing, etc., there are immeasurable sufferings.' Gods have the suffering of falling, and the suffering of being afflicted by feverish diseases. The suffering of falling is particularly great. Three omens of death will appear: the color of the body will change, one will dislike one's seat, garlands of flowers will become old, clothes will become stained with dirt, and suffering that was not there before will arise. Just seeing with clairvoyance, etc., that one will fall into the three lower realms is like a fish being thrown onto the shore, or a dragon child being carried away by a Garuda, or a camel losing its young, or a large ship sinking in the ocean, it is said. The suffering of being afflicted by feverish diseases is seven or sixteen times greater than the suffering endured by beings in the Avici Hell, it is said. In short, even if one is born in the heavens, there are immeasurable sufferings, etc., it is said. From the peak of the heavens to the lower Avici Hell.
