Let alone thoughts of abandoning self and so on, even saying, "Are all these phenomena appearing but without inherent existence?" Or, "Because these phenomena are inconceivable, should I meditate without focusing on them?" Like this, even having a tiny bit of mental activity and clinging is a fault. This is the instruction for eliminating clinging, so (the teacher) said. Jomo asked the teacher: How does the experience of meditating and realizing arise? The teacher replied: During meditation, appearance and non-appearance, as well as no arising and no ceasing, and so on, all these categories of names, because there is no entity in samsara, therefore, in order to represent it, they are merely temporarily designated names. By meditating in this way, one will also realize that there is no inherent establishment of anything in these phenomena. Because there is no entity in samsara, there is nothing to be abandoned; nor is there nirvana to be attained. One will also realize that these two are just names. Truly speaking, all the dharmas of samsara and nirvana, in the ultimate sense, are nothing at all, transcending the realm of the mind, not just words, but a thorough decision from the depths of the heart, thereby directly realizing it. If someone does not realize it in this way, but only verbally says that all phenomena are unborn, or thinks that this is emptiness and practices by focusing on it, this is just a superficial experience, and one will not be able to obtain certainty in this way. After realizing phenomena in this way, when one does not focus on its meaning, at that time, even if phenomena still appear, one does not see even a speck of the entity and characteristics of the mind, or something that can be indicated or focused on. Because when experiencing or knowing its meaning, nothing that can be grasped appears, one does not generate the memory and attention of "this phenomenon is this." However, one has not yet abandoned the habitual patterns of mistaken conceptualization. At that time, all phenomena are like looking with eyes into clear water, in the line of sight, like colors gathered together, and like a woman looking in a mirror, each appearing in its own way, but the thought of "this is this" does not arise. The nature of the mind manifests as clear and bright as the sky. At that time, oneself also does not appear as oneself, or one feels as if one is dwelling in the sky, or one feels afraid or terrified by seeing the knower and the known separately, or one does not want to dwell in it.

Ah, me! Seeing as name and form, not allowing the thought of sentient beings. When arising from that and engaging in conduct, even when slightly examining things, one does not perceive things as things, and even when walking, one does not feel the walking. When eating, there is no thought of eating, it arises clearly. At that time, examining all things, the realization of non-acceptance and non-rejection also arises. In this, are I and all things merely conventional illusions? Seeing as like the sky, I also do not see as I, and others also do not see as others. Even when closing the eyes, one looks within the mind, all objects gradually become unclear, the flow of mind ceases, separated from appearance, the clarity of intelligence becomes like the sky, one does not even feel the existence of the body, and one does not feel the movement of breath. That mind is like the light of a mirror in the dawn sky, unwavering, clear, and bright, abiding luminously, self-illuminating without grasping, abiding without difference between day and night. Sometimes the mind stream gradually goes into things, and sometimes it goes away suddenly. The remedy for that is: do not grasp that clarity, do not fixate, but simply rest in the state of self-illumination. Even when about to rise, one does not feel the rising, and even when slightly risen, one goes away suddenly. Thus, all things with appearance, due to the power of the determination made earlier on the seat, during the time of equipoise, things appear like illusions, but one abides without grasping or fixation. If one can abide without fear of samsara, then that is called seeing appearance without movement. The method of remedy for that is: at that time, whatever signs of conceptual thoughts of objects arise, even the thought that 'this is this thing' is abandoned, but initially, although one negates, one does not negate, in the middle, one does not grasp its appearance, and finally, one does not follow after it, but rests in a state of self-arising and self-pacifying. If one can abide in this way for as long as one desires, then that is called the mind being workable or free from effort. When abiding in that state, at that time, the consciousness that arises after emerging from equipoise, examining later, or examining during the time of equipoise itself, then there is no need to correct wisdom. No matter how the object to be grasped appears, one does not intentionally generate examination, and no matter what kind of conceptual thought arises, it is in the nature of reality.
