After making offerings, he requested the teacher, saying: Great teacher! Please have compassion and consider me. Firstly, I have little learning; secondly, my wisdom is shallow; thirdly, I am old and my elements are decaying. I beseech the great teacher to grant me teachings that are easy to understand, that cut through inner and outer exaggerations, that are easy to realize, that have a broad view, that are easy to practice, that benefit the next life, and that are suitable for an old man facing death. After he said this, the teacher pointed his staff at the old man's heart and gave the following instructions: Listen, old man, look at this self-aware bodhicitta! It has no form or color, no beginning or middle. Initially, there is no place of origin, hence it is empty; in the middle, there is no place of dwelling, hence it is empty; finally, there is no place to go, hence it is empty. Within emptiness, nothing is established, yet it is clear and pure. If you see and recognize that, then you recognize your own face, you understand the dharma's nature, you see the mind's essence, you settle the true nature of things, and you cut through the exaggerations of what is to be known. That awareness, the mind of enlightenment, is not established as anything, so it abides naturally within itself. Since it cannot be sought from elsewhere, it is easy to realize the meaning of dharmata. In the meaning of mind itself, there is no object of grasping or being grasped. It transcends the extremes of permanence and annihilation. There is nothing to bind in liberation, even becoming a Buddha is one's own awareness self-liberating. There is no place to go to hell, because awareness is self-purifying. There is nothing to do with dharma, because dharmata is self-luminous. Because that great self-existing view is within oneself, there is no need to seek it elsewhere, so be certain of that. Having realized the view in this way, if you wish to practice, then in the place where you naturally abide, such as a solitary place in the mountains of your body, whatever arises in outer appearances is appearance self-appearing, emptiness self-empty, abide free from the extremes of elaboration. Therefore, take appearances as friends, purify them in their own place, transform appearances into the path, and practice. Whatever thoughts arise in the inner mind, whatever moves in the mind, has no essence, it is empty. Moving thoughts are purified in their own place, mind itself is clear, so it is easy to transform moving thoughts into the path and practice. Secretly, whatever afflictions arise, if you look at afflictions as afflictions, they will subside without a trace, afflictions are purified in their own place, and it is easy to practice. When you practice in this way, there is no need to do session meditation, knowing that everything is a helper, practice will become clear.

There is no hesitation. Regarding the meaning of Dharmata, there is no interruption. In conduct, there is no broadness or narrowness. However one abides, regarding the meaning of Dharmata, there is no gathering or separation. Just by realizing this slightly, even though the body composed of the elements ages, the Bodhicitta does not age. In age, there is no old or young. Regarding the meaning of Dharmata, there is no partiality, because recognizing that the wisdom of awareness-Dharmata is within oneself, therefore in faculties, there is no sharpness or dullness. Regarding the meaning of Dharmata, there is no partiality, because understanding that there is none, therefore in hearing, there is no great or small. Even if the illusory body of matter and awareness disintegrates, the awareness-wisdom Dharmakaya has no interruption. Because one has obtained immutability and stability, therefore in lifespan, there is no long or short, thus it was said. Old man, Put the true meaning into practice. Let the practice be mastered in your being. Do not confuse words and meaning. Do not separate from the companion of diligence. Hold it with the reckoning of mindfulness. Do not delight in idle talk and lewd speech. Do not mix with ordinary mind. Do not let the suffering of children be too great. Do not be too greedy for food and drink. In ordinariness, contemplate death. Life has no leisure, generate diligence. Old man, this is the instruction for the time of death, thus he said, and then planted his staff in the heart of the old man and gave the instruction, therefore, it is called the instruction of the planted staff for the old man. Ngok Sherab Gyalpo was liberated and attained accomplishment. For the benefit of future generations, Kharchen Zha wrote down the letters. The name is also called the instruction of the planted staff. The teacher Padmasambhava, who is said to be the incarnate body, after being invited by King Trisong Detsen, when he was residing in Samye Drakmar Palgyi, There was an old woman named Tonza Gedenma, who had very strong faith, and she had a servant girl named Margongza Rinchen Tso, and every morning, she would have her send a bowl of yogurt with a pinch of raisin flour mixed in. Then, when the teacher was about to go to Samye Chimphu, at the entrance of the gate, she prostrated and circumambulated, and then joined her palms in front and asked: Great teacher! Teacher, you are leaving, and I, the old woman, am about to die. Firstly, I am a woman, born into a lower realm; distracted by activities, I cannot remember the Dharma; secondly, I am dull-witted and have little wisdom; thirdly, I am old and senile; my awareness is unclear.
