Za Tsho Gyal asked: Great Teacher, which came first, Buddha or sentient beings? If Buddha came first, and sentient beings arose from the initial delusion of the Buddha, then there would be no need to attain Buddhahood, and striving in Dharma would be meaningless. If sentient beings came first, then who would teach the first sentient beings? Since sentient beings have no teachers, no matter how much they practice, they will not attain Buddhahood. If Buddha and sentient beings are simultaneous, and each goes their own way, then sentient beings are separated from the cause of Buddhahood. If the essence is one, then who will counteract whom? Please, Great Teacher, speak without error. The Teacher said: Daughter of fortune, speech of confidence, listen carefully. Buddha and sentient beings have no precedence, for in the beginning, when there were neither Buddha nor sentient beings, there was no Dharma, no teacher, no listener, no speaker, no words, no expression, no happiness or suffering, no good or bad, no beginning or end, no basis, no name, nothing to be designated, existing like the sky. Prior to the Buddha, the mind-maker, Dharmakaya Samantabhadra, without effort or practice, was spontaneously enlightened. Prior to sentient beings, the Dharma-being, Samantabhadri, arose at the same time, and mind and Dharma became the basis for both Buddha and sentient beings, arising simultaneously. Jomo asked: How did Dharmakaya Samantabhadra become enlightened without effort? The Teacher said: The essence is the spontaneously accomplished Buddha, but since no essence, name, or designation has ever been established, it abides without change in that state, spontaneously accomplished in great equality, and thus remains unchanging in the three times. Jomo asked: How did the mind-maker Samantabhadra and the Dharma-being Samantabhadri become the basis for the meaning of Buddha and sentient beings? The Teacher said: The mind of universal discrimination and the wisdom of the essence, the Dharma-being, both arose spontaneously without effort. From the mind arose coemergent ignorance, and by going its own way, it became the basis for sentient beings, deluding downwards, and thus sentient beings arose. From the Dharma arose coemergent wisdom, and by going its own way, it became the basis for the Buddha, attaining Nirvana. Both of these are called Alaya.

It is named "Understanding." Among them, the mind of the Alaya consciousness's conceptualization is like a husband, the basis of action, the female, is like a wife, and co-emergent ignorance is like a daughter. The origin or separation of the two, Buddha and sentient beings, should be understood in this way, it is said. Jo-mo asked: How does the downward cycle of suffering for sentient beings arise? The teacher replied: That is because the mind-maker, Samantabhadra, like a husband, looks inward at the Alaya consciousness and grasps it as "I" and "self." Therefore, like a daughter being born, co-emergent ignorance arises, which, although without substance, is very harmful. It hinders the arising of co-emergent wisdom, which is like a son, and thus accumulates habitual obscurations. From this arises the imputed ignorance, which, although appearing without substance, is very harmful. Like a daughter seeking a husband, the consciousness turns outward and follows the five sense consciousnesses, thus accumulating various karmas. By grasping as "I" and "self" where there is no "I" and no self-nature, various habitual tendencies of virtue, non-virtue, and neutrality are accumulated. From this cause, suffering such as birth, aging, sickness, and death arises. Furthermore, the imputed ignorance, like seeking a husband, causes the mind consciousness, like a husband, to look outward. When these two follow the five senses like engaging in desire, they become deluded in the six realms like the proliferation of descendants, it is said. Jo-mo asked: How does one become a Buddha upwards? The teacher replied: As before, Dharma is like a wife, and the mind-maker is like a couple. Among them, Dharma, like the wife Samantabhadri, is the knowable realm of Dharma, and the mind-maker, Samantabhadra, is the knowing awareness of wisdom. Therefore, one does not grasp "I" and "self" in the realm of Dharma. By enjoying the great bliss of the non-duality of realm and wisdom, the son, co-emergent wisdom, arises. Like a daughter, co-emergent ignorance ceases along with it. Confusion is transformed into wisdom, and conceptualization is transformed into Dharmata. The Dharmakaya, co-emergent wisdom, realizes Buddhahood by knowing itself, cutting off the continuum of birth in the six realms, and attaining the three bodies.
