Among the two methods of abiding, first, during session meditation, keep the body straight, sit in the vajra posture, slightly bend the neck, lower the gaze to the tip of the nose, touch the tongue to the palate, place the hands on the knees, and apply this to all activities of walking, standing, sitting, and lying down. Second, the method of abiding of the mind is: the great abiding of not abiding in anything. In the state of realizing the view, let the senses relax naturally, keep the body and mind natural, clear, and without attachment, keep the dharmakaya clear and without clinging to the dharmakaya, practice as it is, practice for a long time, practice continuously, and practice with reverence. What is meant by 'as it is' is that in the state of realizing the view, if no thought of clinging arises in that clear practice, it is the meaning of unwavering equanimity. To be clear there means to be clear in bliss, clear in wisdom, clear in non-conceptual awareness, and clear in the play of wisdom, yet without clinging to bliss, without clinging to wisdom, without clinging to non-conceptual awareness, and without clinging to the play of wisdom. That non-clinging awareness is the unattached, natural arising. The enemies of such practice are: dullness and agitation, permanence and annihilation, a total of four. If dullness arises, do not focus on anything about dullness in the mind, this is the instruction to transform dullness and confusion into dharmakaya. If dullness does not arise, then practice by uplifting awareness. Agitation refers to: fearing agitation, and agitation itself, wanting to pull it back, wanting to abide without agitation, and so on. If one recognizes that agitation is one's own mind-essence, then agitation will increase into dharmata. Because one does not see the root of agitation, does not see what to prevent, does not see what to abide in, and does not see what to purify, therefore recognizing that itself is transforming conceptual thoughts into dharmata. This is the method of subduing conceptual thoughts. If one does not recognize it in this way, it is the instruction to gather the scattered, that is, to abide and practice in the state of unchanging mind-essence. Furthermore, four places of loss occur in practice: it is called losing to scattered thoughts, that is, the mind is lost without mindfulness. Losing to the dullness of shamatha, that is, awareness is sluggish and the meaning of dharmata is not clear. It is called losing to awareness-sensation, that is, wanting to grasp without letting it dissipate. It is called the thought itself being lost, that is, knowing it, contracting inward, and abiding. These are the four places of loss. The method of removing faults is not to place awareness in the wrong place.
