The emanation of the master said, "Do not bestow instructions upon those who are not vessels and do not possess fortune." Jomo asked, "What does this refer to?" The master said, "Those who are disrespectful to the lama, who abandon the Dharma as a means, who transfer it to others after obtaining it, who use instructions as merchandise for oral transactions, who do not adhere to the teachings of the lineage, and who do not practice—giving them the Dharma is not suitable as a vessel for instructions. Because they do not understand and lack certainty, they cannot practice. Giving instructions to a bad vessel causes the instructions to become mere accumulations of letters and books, leading to the corruption of the Dharma, which is meaningless." The emanation of the master said, "Do not teach the Dharma to those who slander." Jomo asked, "What faults would there be?" The master said, "Because there is no essence of the instructions and no blessing of the lineage, the mind and Dharma cannot be integrated. Teaching the Dharma to those skilled in following speculation causes them to slander the Dharma. Because they slander the nature of reality, they accumulate negative karma. If they are not pleased with it themselves and degenerate, relying on the Dharma, they accumulate negative karma for both, which is meaningless." The emanation of the master said, "Do not associate with retinues who use instructions as merchandise for oral transactions." Jomo asked, "What does this refer to?" The master said, "Do not associate with those who are fond of worldly gain and fame, who become arrogant after hearing a little, who do not prioritize practice, but rather act as merchants selling the Dharma. Even if they receive a little food and offerings, they cannot protect the Dharma, even with the lama's seal. Do not bestow secret instructions upon such people, as it will corrupt the Dharma. There is no point in giving the nectar of immortality to others without consuming it oneself." The emanation of the master said, "Extract the essence of the secret instructions and give it to those who have karmic connections from previous lives." Jomo asked, "What does this refer to?" The master said, "Seeing the lama as the Buddha, thereby generating great faith; seeing the instructions as nectar, thereby generating certainty; being free from doubt, thereby seeing the teachings as precious jewels; seeing the suffering of samsara as poison, thereby striving in practice; seeing the activities of this life as meaningless, thereby being able to endure hardships in asceticism. If you give instructions to such a person, it will benefit both oneself and others. Just as a lion's milk cannot be contained in an inferior vessel, but if it is poured into a golden vase, it will be extraordinary." The emanation of the master said, "If you do not put it through the crucible of asceticism, the practice will not penetrate the continuum, therefore asceticism is crucial." Jomo asked, "The crucible of asceticism..."

How to enter (practice)? Asked, replied: First, practicing Dharma should not be mixed with asceticism, and it will not succeed with just laziness and sloth. Choose an auspicious month for the time, and spring and autumn for the season; choose the eighth or fifteenth day of the month for the date; choose a cemetery, snow mountain, abode of accomplished ones, or a secluded place for the location. There, arrange the mandala, arrange the offerings, arrange the objects of worship, offer torma to the local deities, nagas, etc., and command them not to create obstacles. In the morning and evening practice, avoid fatigue, offer to the Lama and the Three Jewels, pray, and regularly offer torma to the Yidam and Dharma protectors. When offering torma, do not pour the food outside, but place it inside. During the day, transform appearances into the path, do not fabricate appearances, keep them in their original state, keep them in their self-liberated state, keep them without clinging, keep them relaxed. At night, bring awareness into the path, in the evening, do not let the mind sink into dullness, keep it clear. At midnight, merge sleep with Dharma nature, and fall asleep in a state of unconsciousness, strongly hoping to recognize dreams as dreams in the dream state. In this way, one can also remember Dharma nature in dreams and be liberated from suffering and happiness. At dawn, bring Dharma nature into the path, wake up from sleep, and when the body is comfortable, clearly contemplate Dharma nature, without clinging, without adding any artificial modifications, and clearly meditate. Do not indulge in bad habits and laziness, but increase the intensity of asceticism and meditate. Until accomplishment, do not wear other people's clothes, do not eat bad food and food that harms practice, do not move the cushion, do not accept other people's protection, do not wash the body, clothes, dirt, head, and hair, do not cut hair and nails, do not teach Dharma to others. Vows should also be extended, not completed all at once. Until accomplishment, abandon doing things for others, and strive to increase virtuous deeds for one's own benefit. After the asceticism is completed, gradually offer thanksgiving offerings. After retreat, protect the results of the retreat for a few more days, and do not go too far from the village. In general, if you want to obtain happiness, you must first guide yourself with suffering such as asceticism, so that the practice of Dharma can get on the right track, and thus obtain lasting happiness. The incarnate teacher said: If you do not know how to extend the vows, you will be taken away by the demons of obstacles. Jomo asked what that was? Replied: Not losing the key point is to practice asceticism and vows.
