It is said that violations of vows are mostly prevalent. Jomo asked, "What are they like?" Master Padmasambhava secretly said, "There are also vow violations for the sake of exalting oneself." "There are also vow violations of intending to offer to the guru, but changing one's mind and turning one's own wealth into public property." "There are also vow violations of deceiving the guru and Dharma friends with lies." "There are also vow violations of despising the kind guru and repeating bad words." "There are also vow violations of blaming one's own faults on the guru and repeating that one's vows are pure." "There are also vow violations of falsely claiming to have the qualities of a guru when one does not." "Knowing that one has not listened to the Dharma, has not received empowerment, and does not have instructions, but saying that one does, there are many such bad things, so blessings and abilities manifest rarely." Master Padmasambhava said, "The most important thing for practicing Dharma is firm faith, and ten causes are needed to generate faith." Jomo asked, "What are they?" "Recognizing that there is no happiness in the current harsh behavior, believing in the cause and effect of good and bad karma, remembering that one will die and generating renunciation, knowing that at the time of death, enjoyment, children, relatives, and not associating are unnecessary, knowing that one is uncertain where one will be reborn in the next life, so one has no autonomy over one's dwelling, knowing that one has obtained a pure human body but wastes it without practicing Dharma, recognizing that no matter where one is born in the six realms of samsara, one cannot escape suffering, hearing the great qualities of the Three Jewels, seeing the conduct and qualities of the excellent guru, and associating with good Dharma friends who abide in virtue, if these arise or are remembered in the mindstream, then that person can be liberated from samsara, and it is not easy for even one of them to arise in the mindstream." Master Padmasambhava said, "If one practices Dharma sincerely, one needs thirteen practices of renunciation." Jomo asked, "What are they?" "If one does not abandon one's homeland, one cannot defeat the demon of pride; if one does not give up household affairs, one cannot find the opportunity to practice Dharma; when faith arises, if one does not go to practice Dharma, one cannot accomplish one's work; if one does not have faith in oneself, do not blame others; if one does not throw one's possessions into the wind, one cannot make a firm decision to practice Dharma; if one does not distance oneself from relatives, attachment will arise."

The stream of hatred should not be cut off. If you don't practice Dharma now, there will be nowhere to be born in the future. If you don't practice now when you have autonomy, but pray for the future, that won't work. If you don't lie to yourself, then be determined to practice the true Dharma. Relatives, wives, children, wealth, etc., must be abandoned. It is meaningful to abandon them now. Do not manage a government that has no definite benefit for you, but cultivate the virtuous deeds that are definitely needed. Do not make plans for next year that are uncertain whether they are needed, but do the virtuous deeds that are definitely needed, he said. If you practice Dharma diligently, the suffering of food and clothing will come naturally without having to do it. He said that he had never heard or seen of anyone who starved to death from practicing Dharma. Guru Padmasambhava said: If you want to truly practice Dharma, you must have thirteen precious things. The Jomo asked: What are the thirteen? He replied: Cherish honoring and serving a guru who has qualities; cherish relying on a guru who has instructions for a long time; cherish having steadfast faith and respect for the Three Jewels; cherish being cautious even about small sins and non-virtues; cherish meditating on impermanence in your mind three times during the day and three times during the night; cherish generating diligence in virtuous Dharma; cherish always meditating on love and compassion for sentient beings; cherish reducing attachment to appearances and things by means of methods; cherish generating certainty in the unerring key instructions; cherish guarding vows and precepts properly; cherish not spreading secret instructions to unworthy vessels; cherish striving to rely on solitary places for practice; cherish constantly settling your own mind. He said that if you have these, you will attain Dharma. Guru Padmasambhava said: If you want Dharma, there is a method. The Jomo asked: How should I do it? He replied: If you want to see the meaning of Dharmata, you must rely on a guru; if you want to be liberated from samsara, you must abandon your household; if you know that you will die, you must practice Dharma; if you want to meditate on non-duality, you must give up activities; if you want to perfect qualities, you must practice; if you want to abandon suffering, you must abandon your retinue; if you want to generate experience, you must go to solitary places; if you want to be without attachment and aversion, you must leave your homeland; if you want to watch a spectacle, you must look at the clear mirror of your own mind; if you want to quickly attain siddhis, you must pray to the guru and yidam.
