One must ignite the lamp of wisdom! For the rock of pride, one must use the iron hammer of diligence to destroy it from its foundation! For the red whirlwind of jealousy, one must wear the garment of patience to ward it off! In general, if these five poisons are allowed to run wild, they will destroy one's own continuum, so it is very important not to let the five poisons run rampant, said Guru Padmasambhava. Guru Padmasambhava said: Practicing Dharma must be endowed with five signs of seeing. Lady Tsogyal asked: What are those? He said: One must see that the mind-essence of the sacred Dharma, which is beyond words, is without substance; One must see that this appearance is self-liberated without grasping; Whatever experience arises, one must see it as insubstantial great bliss; One must see the lama as the Buddha with devotion; In general, practicing Dharma must see that there is no attachment to anything. Guru Padmasambhava said: Practicing Dharma must be endowed with five accomplishments. Lady Tsogyal asked: What are those? He said: One must not neglect the lama's instructions, but must accomplish practice; One must practice oneself and accomplish one's own benefit; One must be able to guide disciples for the benefit of others, endowed with the descent of blessings; Appearance is liberated into Dharma, one must accomplish the uncorrected natural state; Knowing one's own face by oneself, one must accomplish one's own mind as the Buddha; In this present time, Tibetan practitioners do not possess even one accomplishment! Guru Padmasambhava said: Practicing Dharma must be endowed with five kinds of greatness. Lady Tsogyal asked: What are those? He said: One must have a great lama's instructions; The instructions must also be endowed with the greatness of profound means; One must have the greatness of enduring asceticism; One must have great faith in the Dharma; One must have a great determination for practice; If one does not possess these five, one will not ultimately escape from samsara. Guru Padmasambhava said: Practicing Dharma must be endowed with five kinds of proficiency. Lady Tsogyal asked: What are those? He said: One must be proficient in the Dharma, so that knowing one thing liberates one from all; One must be proficient in the space of Dharmata, so that the unborn arises in the continuum; One must be proficient in the place of samaya, so that there is no defilement in the mind; One must be proficient in the place of life-force through diligence, so that wind and mind are brought under control; One must be proficient in the place of instructions, so that the instructions are effective for whatever kind of person. Guru Padmasambhava said:

Guru Rinpoche said: There are five small necessities for practicing Dharma. Jomo asked, "What are they?" If attachment to samsara has not been relinquished, there is little need to generate faith. If attachment to objects has not been relinquished, there is little need to meditate on emptiness. If the mind has not turned away from desire, there is little need to meditate. If the mind has not turned away from attachment and aversion, there is little need to explain the instructions. If one is not concerned with one's own benefit, there is little need for kind words. Guru Rinpoche said: To practice Dharma, one must have five necessities. Jomo asked, "What are they?" If one is embraced by the minds of the holy ones, there is a need to obtain the essence of the instructions. If one continuously maintains strong devotion to the lama, there is a need for blessings to arise powerfully. If one accumulates special merits, there is a need for wishes to be fulfilled. This creates the need for samadhi to arise in the mindstream. This creates the need to quickly attain the state of all-knowing Buddhahood. Guru Rinpoche said: There are five falsehoods in claiming to be a Dharma practitioner. Jomo asked, "What are they?" To be openly delighted in this world and repeat fearful words about the next life is false. To engage in actions that do not fear the three lower realms and yet claim to take refuge is false. To not turn the mind away from desire and yet claim to be a great meditator is false. To not understand cause and effect and yet claim to have realized the view is false. To not sever the cliff of existence and yet claim to be a Buddha is false. There are many who claim to be Dharma practitioners and tell lies to both themselves and others, but at the time of death, all those lies will turn against them. Guru Rinpoche said: To practice Dharma, one must have five definite instructions. Jomo asked, "What are they?" Without meditation, realization will definitely not arise. If the skillful means and wisdom of the Great Vehicle are separated, one will definitely fall into the Hearer Vehicle. If one does not understand the union of view and conduct, one will definitely go astray. If one does not realize the purity of one's own mind, there will definitely be virtuous and non-virtuous actions. If one does not realize one's own mind, one will definitely not attain Buddhahood. Guru Rinpoche said: There are five meaningless things in practicing Dharma. Jomo asked, "What are they?" It is meaningless to rely on a teacher who lacks essence. It is meaningless to rely on a student who does not keep vows. It is meaningless to know Dharma without putting it into practice.
