Pages 279 to 378. Pages 279 to 378. Also, it is said that it is not considered a fault. When asked, "What is the method for taking secret refuge?" The master said, "Make prostrations and circumambulations to the lama, and offer flowers. The disciple, in a cross-legged posture, with compassion, for the sake of self and others, should make a vow to cultivate the mind of enlightenment. Then, let the eyes look at a grain-sized object, without moving the eyeballs, clearly, relaxed, focused, steadily, and place the awareness on that which is free from the grasping and fixation of the mind of meditation. Only that is the view with confidence, the meditation with experience, and the conduct with companions." Thus, he introduced it. Then, meditate as before. This is the explanation of secret refuge. The emanation body master Padmasambhava said, "The three refuges, outer, inner, and secret, the Dharma, outer and inner, the views, high and low, the essence of mantra, are all combined into one essential instruction. If you do this, the Dharma will become Dharma, the Dharma will become the path, and the path will ripen into fruit. Kharchen Zha, you should know this." This is the section on taking refuge as a path. Seal the treasure, seal the hidden, seal the entrusted. The great master called Padmasambhava, an emanation of the Buddha Amitabha, having studied many sutras of the Great Vehicle, cherishes all sentient beings like a mother cherishing her only child, constantly accomplishing the benefit of others, is the guide who liberates all sentient beings in samsara from suffering, and bestows instructions even without being asked. That Bodhisattva with great compassion, while residing in Mönkha Singye Phukpa (in Singye Dzong, Bhutan), Kharchen Zha Tsogyal herself generated the supreme mind of enlightenment, offered a mandala to the master, and asked, "Emaho! Great master, in the Dharma of the Great Vehicle, it is said that the most important thing is to cultivate love and compassion for all sentient beings, and thereby train the mind in enlightenment. So, how should one learn to train the mind in enlightenment?" The master replied, "Tsogyal, having entered the Great Vehicle, if you do not train the mind of enlightenment, you will fall into the Lesser Vehicle, so it is very important to constantly learn to benefit others." To explain this in detail, although countless methods are taught in the sutras and tantras of the Great Vehicle, one should align with those methods.

In short, the teachings are summarized into three aspects: external practice, internal practice, and secret practice. It is said that there are these three practices. Jomo asked, "What is the method of external practice?" The master replied, "External practice has twelve aspects: the nature of cultivating the mind of enlightenment, the classification, the definition, the characteristics of the individual, the object of taking, the ritual of taking, the benefits of practice, the reasons for practice, the faults of not practicing, the dharma to be protected, the boundaries of giving up and obtaining, and the methods of recovery if degenerated, are all included in these twelve aspects." Jomo asked, "What are these aspects specifically?" The master replied, "Among them, the nature of generating the mind of enlightenment is: the commitment and determination to attain unsurpassed enlightenment in order to liberate all sentient beings from samsara." "In terms of classification: although the sutras describe many kinds of classifications, in general, they can be summarized into two types: the mind of aspiration for enlightenment and the mind of engaging in enlightenment. Among them, the mind of aspiration for enlightenment refers to: aspiring with the mind to accomplish the benefit of sentient beings. This alone is not enough; it is very important to actually engage in benefiting all sentient beings. For those of us who have not yet separated from ego-grasping and harbor prejudice, generating the mind of enlightenment itself is a difficult thing." "Third, in terms of definition: it refers to generating a mind that one did not have before, thinking for the benefit of others. For sentient beings who have not accumulated merit, it is impossible to generate the mind of enlightenment." "Fourth, the characteristics of the individual who enters the practice of cultivating the mind of enlightenment are: not like the hearers and solitary realizers, but having faith in the Great Vehicle Dharma, having great wisdom, having no doubts about anything, being under the protection of the master and the Three Jewels, being disgusted with evil and inferior dharmas, and being naturally peaceful and gentle. Nowadays, the people of Tibet are numb to the Dharma, the ministers are malicious, the king listens to slander, and few are able to become vessels for the Great Vehicle Dharma. One should be impartial like Tsogyal." "Fifth, the object of taking the mind of enlightenment is: one should take the mind of enlightenment from a qualified master, who is the possessor of the Great Vehicle mind of enlightenment, has the power of loving-kindness and compassion, does not seek benefit for himself even for a moment, and is able to protect the precepts that have been transmitted without degenerating. Because in this degenerate age, if one does not rely on a qualified master, one will fall into the hands of demons."
