Meditating without benefiting one's own mind-stream is meaningless; speaking about Dharma without benefiting oneself is meaningless. In general, there are many meaningless actions, because ignorance prevents one from distinguishing between good and bad, said Padmasambhava. Guru Rinpoche said: To practice Dharma, one must possess six noble qualities. Jo-mo asked what they were. He replied: In terms of view, mastering self-nature, knowing that everything is mind; in terms of discipline, without hypocrisy, one's own mind-stream is free from defilement; in terms of generosity, without partiality, there is no taking and giving; in terms of patience, being able to endure obstacles, without anger towards enemies; in terms of listening, taming one's own mind-stream, transforming suffering into the path; in terms of meditation, not being carried away by the demons of merit. Practitioners should also be in accordance with the Dharma. Guru Rinpoche said: To practice Dharma, one must abandon four faults. Jo-mo asked what they were. He replied: Practice cannot be lazy and lax, it must be like a flowing river, the yoga practice must be continuous; experience cannot be seeing ghosts, one must liberate one's own mind-stream through Dharma; behavior cannot be pretense, it must arise naturally; respect cannot be taking, it must arise from the feet of the Guru. In general, practitioners If they do not separate from these four faults, they will only bring shame upon themselves at the time of death. Guru Rinpoche said: Those practitioners who are greedy for fame and profit, and who calculate gains and losses, are worse than ordinary people. Jo-mo asked why. He replied: Practitioners pursue status, relying on Gurus for fame, giving teachings for fame, monks pursuing numbers, temples pursuing scale, offerings pursuing abundance, doing good deeds pursuing appearances, psychic powers pursuing display, retreats pursuing formality, key instructions pursuing profundity. If one cannot abandon worldly pride, and only pretends to be diligent, like a donkey turning around in a mill, one will only regret it at the time of death. Guru Rinpoche said: If one truly practices Dharma from the heart, one must do fourteen inverted things. Jo-mo asked what they were. He replied: Abandoning fertile land, going to secluded temples; eating famine food, practicing asceticism and consuming essence; not going to noble thrones, practicing humble behavior; doing things that enemies like, cutting off all relationships; wearing disgusting clothes, being a wanderer; hating the love of relatives, cutting off family ties; competing with the Buddha, practicing diligently; placing attachment on key instructions.

Practice the Dharma! In a secluded place, contemplate the Yidam, strive to recite! Bad scriptures and sins, throw them behind you! To a generous Lama, offer whatever you have! Turn your back on Samsara, generate renunciation! Give victory to others, do not engage in fierce retaliation! Kill self-grasping, leave the land of evil! Do this, and you will progress in the Dharma! You will be able to turn back from Samsara, so it is said. Guru Rinpoche said: A practitioner must abandon three diseases. Yeshe Tsogyal asked: What are these three? The Guru replied: If you do not abandon the disease of the country, the attachment to your homeland, you will be trapped in the prison of the five poisons, and fall into the lower realms. If you do not abandon the disease of the place, the attachment to your house and home, you will be trapped in the darkness of subject and object, and the knot of clinging will not be cut. If you do not abandon the disease of relationships, the attachment to children, relatives, friends, and spouses, you will be trapped in the mire of Samsara, and the time of liberation will not come. In the house of Samsara where the three diseases have not been abandoned, you will be tormented by the diseases of the three poisons, and without feeling the suffering, you will endure it greatly. Guru Rinpoche said: A practitioner has a way to be liberated from Samsara. Yeshe Tsogyal asked: How should I do that? The Guru replied: If you want to generate special devotion, look at the inner and outer qualities of the Lama. If you want to be in harmony with all actions, do not reject the effort to benefit others. If you want to win the heart of the Lama, practice the instructions given by the Lama. If you want to quickly attain Siddhi, protect your vows without breaking them. If you want to be liberated from the four rivers of birth, old age, sickness, and death, thoroughly uproot the Alaya-consciousness without laziness. If you want your practice to be without obstacles, throw worldly distractions behind you. If you want to accomplish the benefit of others without effort, train your mind in immeasurable love, compassion, joy, and equanimity, and the mind of Bodhicitta. If you are afraid of falling into the three lower realms in the future, abandon the ten non-virtuous actions in this life. If you want both this life and the future to be happy, strive to practice the ten virtuous actions. If you want the Dharma to enter your mind, endure the hardships of suffering. If you want to turn back from Samsara, seek the unsurpassed Bodhi in your own mind. If you want to attain the fruit of the three Kayas, strive to accumulate the two accumulations of merit and wisdom. If you do this, you will be happy. For those who have not turned away from Samsara, there is no happiness. Guru Rinpoche said: A practitioner must keep vows, because vows are difficult to
