Guru Padmasambhava said: There are fifteen unfavorable aspects to practicing Dharma that must be abandoned. Jomo asked, "What are they?" The Guru said: Idle talk, joking, and laughter are three obstacles to meditation, so they must be abandoned. Relatives, friends, and disciples are three causes for procrastination in Dharma practice, so they must be abandoned. Profit, fame, and respect are three stakes that bind one to Dharma, so they must be abandoned. Possessions, busyness, and enjoyment are three distractions from Dharma, so they must be abandoned. Sleep, laziness, and sloth are three great enemies of Dharma practice, so they must be abandoned. In general, when practicing Dharma, causes for procrastination will arise, which is a great fault. Guru Padmasambhava said: Practicing Dharma requires fifteen causes and conditions. Jomo asked, "What are they?" The Guru said: Listening, contemplating, and meditating are three; these three are the pillars of Dharma. Diligence, faith, and trust are three; these three are the life force of Dharma. Wisdom, discipline, and goodness are three; these three are the individuals of Dharma. Non-attachment, non-fixation, and non-grasping are three; these three are the supportive conditions for Dharma. In general, there is no one who practices Dharma who does not possess these three causes and conditions. It is difficult to be in accordance with the Dharma scriptures. Guru Padmasambhava said: There are twenty-one meaningless things in practicing Dharma. Jomo asked, "What are they?" The Guru said: Generating bodhicitta without abandoning harm to sentient beings is meaningless. Receiving empowerments without keeping vows is meaningless. Much listening that does not benefit one's own mind is meaningless. Performing virtuous deeds mixed with sin is meaningless. If one always engages in sin, then relying on a lama is meaningless. A teacher who turns away from Dharma and engages in sin is meaningless. Working to accomplish the eight worldly dharmas is meaningless. Always hating one's parents and relying on objects of veneration as ultimate refuge is meaningless. Engaging excessively in non-virtue and saying one fears falling into hell is meaningless. Giving charity without faith and without being seized by bodhicitta is meaningless. Powerless patience that is not seized by the power of antidotes is meaningless. Meditating on samadhi while always dwelling in agitation and dullness is meaningless. Exertion that does not transform into the path of enlightenment is meaningless. Cultivating wrong knowledge that increases the five poisons is meaningless. The path of compassion

Practicing the Great Vehicle without (compassion) is meaningless; meditating without realizing the nature of one's own mind is meaningless; receiving instructions that one does not practice oneself is meaningless; engaging in altruistic activities without being motivated by bodhicitta is meaningless; taking vows without having the intention to protect them is meaningless; in short, doing many meaningless things, even though they are unnecessary, but children do not listen, (Guru Padmasambhava) said. Guru Padmasambhava said: Practicing Dharma requires four non-retrogression. Jo-mo asked: What are those four? By meditating on the recollection of death, one will not regress for the sake of this life; by meditating greatly on the consequences of the ten non-virtuous actions, one will not regress to the three lower realms; by meditating on loving-kindness, one will not regress to the Lesser Vehicle; by meditating on emptiness, one will not regress to samsara; in short, practicing Dharma requires turning the mind away from the affairs of this life, (Guru Padmasambhava) said. Guru Padmasambhava said: There are four things that will not happen when practicing Dharma, so they must be abandoned. Jo-mo asked: What are those four? If one does not recollect death, there will be no time to practice Dharma; if one does not believe in karma and does not abandon non-virtuous actions, there will be no time to attain liberation in the higher realms; if one does not generate bodhicitta for the benefit of sentient beings and only desires to attain liberation for oneself, there will be no perfect enlightenment; in short, if the mind does not turn away from the affairs of this life, there will be no true Dharma; no one will abandon the world, (Guru Padmasambhava) said. Guru Padmasambhava said: The most important thing in practicing Dharma is to take the essence. Jo-mo asked: What is it? Taking the essence from the body that has no essence is to keep pure morality; taking the essence from possessions that have no essence is to give with the motivation of bodhicitta; taking the essence from accumulations that have no essence is to accumulate the merit of the cause and the wisdom of the result; taking the essence from listening that has no essence is to strive to practice diligently; if one does not know how to take the essence in this way, it is only worldly affairs, (Guru Padmasambhava) said. Guru Padmasambhava said: Practicing Dharma requires five non-mistakes. Jo-mo asked: What are those? There is no mistake in the vows and commitments that have been made, so they must be protected; loving-kindness,
