Because the accumulation of negative karma is mostly dominant, many people think of doing worldly affairs first and then believing in and practicing Buddhism later. Thus, few people are liberated from samsara. Guru Padmasambhava said that there are seven distortions in practicing Dharma. Jomo asked what they were. The Guru said, "If faith is small and wisdom is great, one will be distorted into a preacher; if one relies on many things and has strong sectarian views, one will be distorted into a Geshe; if one is only good at worldly affairs and not proficient in Dharma, one will be distorted into a leader; if one receives instructions but does not practice them, one will be distorted into a lazy person who only knows how to talk about Dharma; if Dharma is not in one's heart but one boasts a lot, one will be distorted into a swindler who eats and drinks at others' expense; if one has little learning and no instructions, even if one has great faith, one is just an ordinary person. If a practitioner is in accordance with the scriptures, then wisdom liberates one's mind-stream, faith tames the mind, listening cuts off doubts, worldly affairs are abandoned, one's mind-stream is integrated into Dharma, learning and contemplation perfect knowledge, instructions determine the mind, and view, meditation, and conduct need to be thoroughly eradicated, which is difficult. Guru Padmasambhava said that there are many mistakes for those who enter the Buddhist gate. Jomo asked what they were. The Guru said, "A Geshe who liberates his mind-stream through learning and contemplation, and a preacher who observes with wisdom, this is one mistake; a practitioner who practices himself, and a lazy person who does not practice but only knows how to talk about Dharma, this is one mistake; a good person who tames his mind-stream with Dharma, and a hypocritical, deceitful, and pretentious person, this is one mistake; the view of someone who has instructions, and the words of an empty talker who only knows how to talk about Dharma, this is one mistake; the faith of a faithful person in Dharma, and the Dharma terms of an empty talker who only knows how to talk about Dharma, this is one mistake. In short, Dharma and one's mind-stream need to be integrated. If one puts Dharma aside and lives in the world, claiming to be a practitioner, these people who only know how to talk are without Dharma. Guru Padmasambhava said that Dharma should become Dharma, Dharma should become the path, the confusion on the path should be eliminated, and confusion should appear as wisdom. Jomo asked what should be done. The Guru said, "If one knows that all Dharmas gather in one vehicle, thereby realizing that there is no acceptance or rejection, then Dharma becomes Dharma; whatever Dharma one practices, it should be combined with refuge, bodhicitta, generation stage, completion stage, skillful means and wisdom, then Dharma becomes the path; the path should be combined with view, meditation, conduct, and result."

Thus, it eliminates the delusion of the path. If you diligently practice from the root of view and meditation, delusion will appear as wisdom. In general, no matter what Dharma you practice, if you do not understand the union of generation stage, completion stage, view and conduct, skillful means and wisdom, it is like being unable to walk with one leg. Guru Padmasambhava said: It is very important for those who practice Dharma not to have gone through the lower vehicles. Jo-mo asked how to practice this. Guru said: If you are attached to the three aspects of bliss, clarity, and non-thought of shamatha, there is no place to go beyond the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. If the three aspects of bliss, clarity, and non-thought of vipassana arise, it is the Dharmakaya. In general, many people's minds are caught up in shamatha, so they are born in the meditative states of the gods, or even if they do not abandon their bodies, they cannot accomplish the benefit of sentient beings. Guru Padmasambhava said: The root of Dharma is refuge and vows. Jo-mo asked when these two arise. Guru said: When you fear the lower realms and have faith in the Three Jewels, the vow of refuge arises. When you have faith in the law of karma, the vow of a lay devotee arises. When you turn away from samsara, the vow of a novice monk arises. When you turn away from all sins, the vow of a fully ordained monk arises. When you treat yourself and others equally with compassion, the vow of aspiring bodhicitta arises. When you cherish others more than yourself, the vow of a Bodhisattva arises. Tibetans regard refuge as a minor Dharma, monks have no discipline, they claim to be Mahayana but have no bodhicitta, mantra practitioners have no samaya, and yogis have no meditation, so it is difficult for accomplished beings to appear in Tibet. Guru Padmasambhava said: Those who practice Dharma must keep their vows, which is very difficult. Jo-mo asked how to keep them. Guru said: If you see the Guru as the Buddha, you have the samaya of body. If you see the Buddha's words as precious jewels, you have the samaya of speech. If you see the instructions as nectar, you have the samaya of mind. If there is no acceptance or rejection towards the yidam, you have the samaya of body. If there is no doubt about the secret mantra, you have the samaya of speech. If you realize the meaning of the nature of reality, you have the samaya of mind. In general, if your mind is pure, your vows are pure. Guru
