If you haven't gone, there is the fault of the instructions not being absorbed. Even if the mind is captured, if the wisdom is not liberated without partiality, there is the fault of not encountering special instructions. Even if you have great devotion, if blessings do not enter, there is the fault of not encountering a realized lama. Even if you make great effort, if there is no benefit in experience, there is the fault of the mind stream not being accomplished. If the elements change by doing virtuous deeds, there is the fault of the mind essence not being stabilized. Even if you meditate, if the mind does not want to stay, there is the fault of the weight of meditation not being reached. If knowledge is arrogant and experiences do not arise immediately, there is the fault of falling into mere calm abiding. If you don't awaken the sharpness of awareness, there is the fault of not knowing how to take appearances as friends. If it is difficult to cut off afflictions and attachments, there is the fault of not knowing how to take the five poisons as the path. If you cannot endure suffering and obstacles, there is the fault of not knowing how to turn your own stream away from samsara. In general, saying you practice Dharma but filling yourself with faults, when will you ever have a single good thing in the future? Padmasambhava said: As a sign of practicing Dharma, ten qualities are needed. Jomo asked, "What are they?" He replied: If you subdue conceptual thoughts with power, it is a sign that the mind essence has taken a strong position. If wisdom arises without partiality, it is a sign that the instructions have hit the point. If you see the lama as a Buddha, it is a sign that you have offered respect to the lama. If blessings come without obstruction, it is a sign that the lineage of siddhas has not been broken. If you can subdue knowledge with effort and diligence, and transform the stream in an impartial way, it is a sign that the mind essence has been accomplished. Even if you do virtuous deeds day and night, if the elements do not change, it is a sign that the winds and mind have reached the point. If there is no difference between meditating and not meditating, clear and unclear, it is a sign that meditation has reached the point. No matter what knowledge arises, no matter what appearances arise, if you can clarify them as the nature of reality, it is a sign that you have raised realization on the path. If the taste of afflictions does not arise, and even if it arises, it immediately subsides, it is a sign that the five poisons have subsided in their place. If you cannot be crushed by the causes of suffering, it is the quality of knowing that the nature of samsara is impermanent. In general, if Dharma is born in the stream, qualities will arise from within. But for all these Tibetans who lack faith, diligence, and wisdom, it is difficult for qualities to arise from within! Padmasambhava's words.

Then, (it is said) if the Dharma is integrated into the mindstream, ten signs will appear. Jomo asked: What are those? (Answer) If attachment is small, it is a sign that demons are entering the door; if afflictions are small, it is a sign that the five poisons are entering the body; if ego is small, it is a sign that demons are entering the door; if there is no shame or embarrassment, it is a sign that delusional appearances are disappearing; if one is free from the object of meditation and the meditator, and abides in the meaning of Dharmata, it is a sign that mind itself, mother and child, are meeting; no matter what appears, if it appears as non-dualistic self-appearance, it is a sign that the view and practice have reached fruition; if one determines that samsara and nirvana are inseparable, it is a sign that the measure of realization has arisen in the mindstream; in short, if one has no attachment even to one's own body, it is a sign of cutting off desire from the root; if the causes of suffering cannot harm, it is a sign of knowing appearances as illusory; if the eight worldly concerns are small, it is a sign of recognizing one's own nature. In general, the inner signs appearing outwardly are like trees growing leaves; the outer signs appearing to others are like the fruits of trees ripening and being edible; there are many practitioners who have not a single quality in their hearts, and those who possess realization are extremely rare, so it is very important to strive in practice. (Guru Padmasambhava) said: For those who have come to practice the Dharma, there are ten "yeses." Jomo asked: What are those? (Answer) When the Dharma abides in the world and beings obtain a human body at the same time, it is that one has accumulated merit in previous lives; having faith in one's own Dharma and meeting a qualified lama is like a blind person finding a jewel; obtaining a pure human body and possessing faith and wisdom is awakening the karmic connections from previous lives; when one feels weary of suffering and relatives and friends speak nonsense at the same time, it is urging oneself to practice the Dharma; when one has wealth and beggars appear at the same time, it is the time to perfect generosity; when practicing virtue, if the ocean of suffering floods in, it is the time when negative karma and obscurations are purified; when one develops faith in the Dharma, if an unprovoked enemy appears, it is the time to embark on the path of patience; when one has extraordinary faith, understands that conditioned things are impermanent, and receives profound instructions at the same time, it is the time to turn one's mind away from worldly affairs; oneself fears impermanence and death, and others die at the same time, it is the time to generate uncommon faith; in short, merit
