It is necessary to dispel the darkness of ignorance like lighting a lamp; it is necessary to have all the Dharma liberated into meaning, like achieving a wish-fulfilling jewel by practicing with pith instructions; it is necessary to be free from the fear of falling into samsara, like a prince being placed on the throne by being guided through the empowerments in stages; it is necessary to hold the root vows as the foundation, like a fertile field, so that whatever is done is not wasted; it is necessary to be proficient in all aspects of the Dharma, like untying a hundred knots by hearing and liberating; it is necessary to know all the tenets of the Dharma, like a bee searching for a hive by comparing from all doors; it is necessary to know all the Dharmas as one taste, like a merchant making profit by gathering into one point; it is necessary to know the meaning of all the Dharmas clearly and without confusion, like becoming an outstanding scholar and reaching the summit of Mount Meru. This is what is needed, (Padmasambhava) said. The people of Tibet, wanting to be scholars without learning these, are actually not proficient and are biased towards the Dharma. Not training in the ten limits of learning is the fault of not training, (Padmasambhava) said. Guru Padmasambhava said: Not training in the ten limits of learning has ten faults. A nun asked: What are they like? (Padmasambhava said:) If the view is not settled, there is the fault of not knowing where to go; if the conduct is abandoned, there is the fault of not knowing the union of view and conduct; if one does not know how to take experience with samadhi, one will not see the meaning of Dharmata; if one does not practice with pith instructions, one does not know how to take experience; if one is not guided through the empowerments in stages, one cannot practice the Dharma; if one does not hold the root vows as the foundation, whatever one does will plant the seeds of hell; if one is not liberated by hearing, one will not taste the flavor of the Dharma; if one does not compare from all doors, one cannot determine the position of the tenets; if one does not gather into one point, one will not know the root of the Dharma; if one does not become an outstanding scholar, one will not see the meaning of the Dharma. Those who are invited as virtuous friends without having studied the Dharma, all do not know that the Dharma is without bias, and there is great contention over the Dharma between each other, do not hold on to the truth in your own place, be silent. (Padmasambhava) said. Guru Padmasambhava said: Practicing the Dharma must have ten essentials. A nun asked: What are the ten essentials? (Padmasambhava said:) The essential of faith, like a river, must be without increase or decrease; the essential of compassion, like the sun, must be without enemies or friends; the essential of generosity, like drinking water, must be without bias.

It needs to be something like that! The teaching of vows needs to be like a flawless crystal ball! The teaching of view needs to be like the sky, without partiality! The teaching of meditation needs to be like the dawn, without dimming or brightening! The teaching of conduct needs to be like pigs and dogs, without acceptance or rejection! The teaching of results needs to be like going to the island of precious jewels and gold, without acceptance or rejection! Towards the Dharma, there needs to be a longing like a thirsty person seeking water! In general, now everything has become not focusing on the Dharma, but focusing on wealth! It is necessary that one's wealth does not run out at the time of death, and that one does not fall into the lower realms! Guru Rinpoche said: There are many who only pay lip service to the Dharma. Jo-mo asked: What is that? Guru said: Reciting without faith is also just lip service! Altruism without compassion is also just lip service! Giving without abandoning miserliness is also just lip service! A mantra practitioner who does not keep vows is also just lip service! A monk who does not keep vows is also just lip service! A good person who does not meditate is also just lip service! Knowledge without practicing the Dharma is also just lip service! Dharma practice that does not match the meaning of practice is also just lip service! Explaining to others without acting according to one's own Dharma is also just lip service! Instructions that one does not take into one's own experience are also just lip service! In general, these scholars who have not tamed their minds with the Dharma, but have instead made the Dharma an addition to their afflictions, hearing what they say is truly annoying! Guru Rinpoche said: There are ten great fortunes in practicing the Dharma. Jo-mo asked: What are they? Guru said: Knowing the Dharma without listening is a great fortune! Having power without practice is a great fortune! Receiving blessings without devotion is a great fortune! Becoming a Buddha without meditating is a great fortune! Finding a guru without respect is a great fortune! Being liberated by a Dharma without lineage is a great fortune! Arising realization without instructions is a great fortune! One's mind being liberated without practice is a great fortune! Attaining realization without diligence is a great fortune! Being auspicious without keeping vows is a great fortune! In general, wanting to easily obtain without experiencing difficulties, these will only bring great fortune, there will be no other result. Guru Rinpoche said: Practicing the Dharma needs to be without falling into ten faults! Jo-mo asked: What are they? Guru said: Even if one meditates, one cannot counteract afflictions and conceptual thoughts.
