Even the slightest bit of mind and clinging, such as "meditating on this," is a fault. This is the instruction for eliminating clinging, he said. Jomo asked the master: How does the experience of meditation and realization arise? The master said: During meditation, appearance and non-appearance, no arising and no ceasing, and all such names, because there is no substance in samsara, are merely temporarily designated names to represent it. By meditating in this way, one will also realize that there is no inherent existence in this thing. Because there is no substance in samsara, there is nothing to be abandoned; there is also no nirvana to be attained. Both of these will also be realized as mere names. In reality, all the dharmas of samsara and nirvana are nothing in the ultimate sense, beyond the realm of the mind, not just words, but a thorough decision from the depths of the mind, thus directly realizing it. If someone does not realize this way, but only verbally says that all things are unborn, and clings to and practices thinking "this is emptiness," this is only a superficial experience, and one will not be able to gain certainty. When one realizes things in this way and does not cling to their meaning, then, even when things appear, one does not see even a trace of anything that can indicate or cling to the substance and characteristics of the mind. Because there is nothing to be experienced or grasped by knowledge, the memory and attention of "this thing is this" do not arise. However, the habitual tendencies of confused thoughts have not yet been abandoned. At that time, all things are like looking with the eyes into clear water, appearing in front of the eyes as if colors were gathered together, and like a woman looking in a mirror, each appearing in its own way, but the idea of "this is this" does not arise. The nature of the mind itself, like the sky, clearly and brightly manifests. At that time, oneself also does not appear as oneself, and one feels as if one is dwelling in the sky. Or, because one sees the knower and the known separately, one feels dizzy or afraid, and does not want to dwell in it. Like seeing name and form, one does not have the concept of sentient beings. When one rises from the meditation seat and engages in activities, even when one slightly examines things,

Though walking in an unseen place, one does not feel the walking; when eating, there is no thought of eating, it arises naturally. At that time, contemplating all things, one also generates the realization of no acceptance or rejection; in this, are I and all things merely illusory? Seeing it like the sky; I also do not see myself as myself; others also do not see themselves as others. Even with eyes closed, one looks inward; all objects become vaguely unclear; the movement of the mind ceases, separated from appearances; the clarity of the mind becomes like the sky; the body is not felt to exist; the movement of breath is also not felt. That mind, like the light of a mirror in the dawn sky, remains unwavering and clear, luminously dwelling, without grasping, self-illuminating and self-revealing; day and night are also without difference. Sometimes the stream of mind gradually goes into things and then goes away together. The remedy for this is: do not grasp that clarity; without grasping, just leave it in its self-illuminating and self-revealing state. Even when trying to get up, one does not feel the getting up; even if one stands up a little, it goes away together. Thus, all things with appearances, due to the power of the determination made earlier on the seat, during the time of equipoise; things appear as they are, without grasping or focusing on them, dwelling without any object of focus, even the desire for enlightenment is illusory; if one can dwell in samsara without fear, it is called seeing appearances without movement. The remedy for this is: at that time, whatever signs of object-thoughts arise; even the thought that 'this is this thing' is abandoned; that also, at first, is not stopped; in the middle, its appearance is not grasped; in the end, one does not follow it, but leaves it in its self-arising and self-subsiding state; if one can dwell like that until one desires, it is called the mind being workable or free from effort. When dwelling like that, at that time, the consciousness that arises from equipoise is examined later, or examined during the time of equipoise itself; wisdom does not need to be remedied; however the object to be grasped appears, one does not intentionally generate examination; however thoughts arise, they are clear in their suchness; however afflictions arise, they arise in their suchness; however suffering occurs, there is no harm; however much happiness arises, there is no benefit; the mind dwells in relaxation, without remedy.
