If someone cannot practice even with the guru's approval, do not give them instructions. It will make the Dharma teachings chaotic. The master said that there is no need to give the nectar of immortality to others without consuming it oneself. The incarnate teacher said: Give the essence of the instructions to those who have karmic connections from previous lives. Jo-mo asked: What kind of person is that? One who sees the guru as a Buddha, therefore has great faith; one who sees the instructions as nectar, therefore generates certainty; one whose mind is free from doubt, therefore sees the teachings as precious jewels; one who sees the suffering of samsara as poison, therefore strives in practice; one who sees the activities of this life as meaningless, therefore can endure hardship in asceticism; giving instructions to such a person will benefit both oneself and others. The master said that just as lion's milk cannot be contained in a bad vessel, it is wonderful to pour it into a golden vase. The incarnate teacher said: If you do not put it into the measure of asceticism, the practice will not penetrate the mind, so asceticism is very important. Jo-mo asked: How to put it into the measure of asceticism? First, if you do not mix asceticism with Dharma practice, it will not work with just laziness and idleness. Choose auspicious months for the time, and spring and autumn for the season; choose auspicious dates such as the eighth or fifteenth; choose to go to a cemetery, snow mountain, place of accomplished beings, or a secluded place; set up a mandala there, arrange offerings, and display supports; give offerings to the local deities, nagas, etc., and command them not to create obstacles; avoid fatigue from Dharma practice in the morning and evening, make offerings to the guru and the Three Jewels, pray, and regularly give offerings to the yidam and Dharma protectors; when giving offerings, do not spill them outwards, but face them inwards; during the day, raise the appearance itself as the path, do not artificially create it, but leave it in its natural state, let it naturally liberate, without clinging, and relax; at night, take awareness as the path, do not let the mind become drowsy in the evening, keep it clear; at midnight, mix sleep with Dharma nature and fall asleep in a state of unconsciousness; strongly desire to recognize that it is a dream in the dream, so that you can also remember the Dharma nature in the dream and be liberated from happiness and suffering; in the early morning, take the Dharma nature as the path, when you wake up and feel comfortable, the Dharma nature is clear and without clinging, naturally arising.

Meditate with clarity, without dullness. Do not give in to bad dullness and laziness, but extend the duration of asceticism and meditate. Until accomplishment, do not wear other people's clothes, do not eat bad food or food that causes deterioration, do not change the cushion, do not accept protection from others, do not wash the body, clothes, dirt, head, and hair, do not cut hair and nails, do not teach the Dharma to others. Vows should also be extended, not done all at once. Until accomplishment, abandon activities for others, and strive to increase virtuous deeds for your own benefit. After the asceticism is completed, gradually offer thanksgiving offerings. After breaking the retreat, protect the state after the retreat for a few days, and do not go to villages or far away. In general, if you want happiness, first lead yourself with suffering such as asceticism, then Dharma practice will be on the right track, and you will obtain long-lasting happiness. The incarnate teacher said: If you do not know how to extend the vow, you will be taken away by the demons of obstacles. Jo-mo asked what this meant. The teacher said: Do not let the key points decline. When practicing ascetic vows, strongly counteract others' hospitality, prostrations, offerings, protection, etc., and the obligations of considering others' feelings and food. The vow should also start from seven days, nine days, half a month, and then gradually extend to a month and a year. The best is thirteen years, the middle is six years, and the worst is six months. Even if this cannot be accomplished, like summer grapes, be without laziness and idleness. If you plant the seed of asceticism on it, it will become meaningful. In short, a vow that cannot be completed is a major cause of decline, so do not make a vow that cannot be completed. The incarnate teacher said: Do not let the key points decline. When practicing in the continuum, verbal silence is very important. Jo-mo asked what this meant. The teacher said: Among distractions, the biggest is talking too much, and idle talk will become an obstacle to virtuous deeds. If you can be silent, that is the best among retreats. Even if the body is in the marketplace, do not watch. Do your best to do asceticism, and it is better if you can be silent. Even if you cannot do it, you must be silent until virtuous deeds are accomplished. In this way, language will generate power and be quickly accomplished. In short, many words that are not Dharma activities are meaningless. Guru Rinpoche said: Yidam deity
