The fruit of the earth will not grow, it will not exist! In general, for the agriculture of this world, one cannot attain the agriculture of liberation without hardship. Teachings on compassion for sentient beings! Guru Padmasambhava said: If you practice Dharma, you must observe eight silences. The Jo-mo asked: What are they? Silence of the body: Reside in a secluded place, not falling into extremes. This reverses the two, attachment and aversion. Silence of speech: Abide in the manner of a mute. This prevents mixing talk with others, which is necessary to avoid distraction from virtuous activities. Silence of mind: Cut off the speech of the mind, and do not constantly let it be dominated by thoughts and distractions. This is necessary to abide in the nature of reality, which is beyond thought. Silence of enjoyment: Cut off speech about enjoyment, and abandon thoughts of purity or impurity regarding food. This is necessary for easy living and the gathering of dakinis. Silence of instructions: Cut off speech about instructions, and do not give them to those who are not suitable vessels. This is necessary for the blessings of the lineage to enter. Silence of conduct: Cut off speech about conduct, and act naturally, free from conventional Dharma. This is necessary to avoid accumulating obscurations in the mind. Silence of experience: Cut off speech about experience, and keep secret from others whatever experiences and realizations arise, and abandon talking about them. This is necessary to attain the siddhi of Mahamudra in this life. Silence of realization: Cut off speech about realization, and abide in a state of freedom from bias and extremes, wherever you desire. This is necessary to be liberated in this very moment, simply through realization. In general, it is not possible to do even a little bit of virtuous activity, and it is not possible to observe silence until each session of recitation is completed. For those who have no control over their desire to speak, no silence will be successful. Guru Padmasambhava said: Even those who practice Dharma are unknowingly deceived by demons. The Jo-mo asked: How are they deceived? Those with great power are deceived by the demon of pride and arrogance. The cunning are deceived by the demon of sweet talk and deception. Ordinary people are deceived by the demon of ignorance and delusion. The wealthy are deceived by the demon of possessions and wealth. All practitioners are deceived by the demon of increasing wealth. They are deceived by the demon of karmic debt and multiplying offspring. They are deceived by the demon of respect and honor from disciples and retinue. They are deceived by the demon of love and affection from close attendants and retinue. They are deceived by the demon of hostility and confrontation with enemies. They are deceived by the demon of false flattery from relatives. The physical reverence

is the demon deceiving. Gentle language and pleasant words are the demon deceiving. Attachment in the mind is the demon deceiving. Beautiful love is the demon deceiving. Diligence in mistaken actions is the demon deceiving. The five poisons residing within oneself are the demons of the mind. The six realms leaving habitual tendencies are the external demons. Attachment to the taste of samadhi is the internal demon. Expectation of the result of Dzogchen is the demon of view. Those with great qualities are also demons, and those who are ignorant and deluded are also demons. Therefore, the great demon is the clinging to self. It is not other, but eliminate it within oneself. In short, if you eliminate the demon within, the demon will not appear from the outside. It is said that there are many who do not recognize the true face of the demon. Guru Padmasambhava said: To practice Dharma, one must eradicate the five poisons from the root. Jo-mo asked: How is that? The master said: A person with great anger suffers greatly himself. A person with great ignorance is like an animal and does not understand the Dharma. A person with great pride has no merit and many enemies. A person with great desire cannot keep vows and has many lies. A person with great jealousy is greedy for high position and likes to sow discord. Do not follow these five poisons, but eliminate them in your heart at the same time as birth and liberation. These people who freely practice the five poisons create suffering for themselves, it is said. Guru Padmasambhava said: To practice Dharma, one must first tame one's own mind. Jo-mo asked: How is that? The master said: The fire of anger must be extinguished with the water of loving-kindness. The river of desire must be crossed with the antidote, a strong bridge. The darkness of ignorance must be illuminated with the lamp of wisdom. The mountain cliff of pride must be destroyed from the foundation with the axe of diligence. The red wind of jealousy must be shielded by wearing the garment of patience. In short, if these five poisons are allowed to run wild, they will destroy one's own mind. Therefore, it is very important not to let the five poisons run wild, it is said. Guru Padmasambhava said: To practice Dharma, one must have five signs of seeing. Jo-mo asked: What are they? The master said: One must see the mind-essence, the true Dharma, which is beyond words, as emptiness. In this way, one must see the appearing phenomena as ungraspable and naturally liberated. For experiences, whatever arises, one must see it as emptiness and great bliss. Because of having devout faith, one must see the lama as the Buddha. In short, practicing Dharma for anything
