Mind, meditation, and action, these three are the framework of Dharma. Diligence, faith, and conviction, these three are the lifeblood of Dharma. The wise, the monastic, and the virtuous, these three are the practitioners of Dharma. Non-attachment, non-grasping, and non-clinging, these three are the conducive conditions for Dharma. In general, for those who practice Dharma, it is impossible to lack three causes and conditions. It is difficult to be in accordance with the Dharma scriptures, so it is said. Guru Padmasambhava said: There are twenty-one meaningless things in practicing Dharma. Jomo asked: What are they? Guru Padmasambhava said: It is meaningless to generate bodhicitta without abandoning the intention to harm sentient beings. It is meaningless to receive empowerments without keeping vows. It is meaningless to have much learning that does not benefit one's own mind. It is meaningless to do virtuous deeds mixed with sin. If one always engages in sin, it is meaningless to rely on a guru. It is meaningless to have a teacher who turns away from Dharma and engages in sin. It is meaningless to do work that pursues the eight worldly concerns. It is meaningless to always hate one's parents while regarding the object of offering as ultimate. It is meaningless to say one fears falling into hell while engaging in even more non-virtue. It is meaningless to give charity without faith and without being embraced by bodhicitta. It is meaningless to have forced patience that is not embraced by the power of antidotes. It is meaningless to meditate on samadhi that is always in a state of sinking or excitement. It is meaningless to exert effort that does not transform into the path of enlightenment. It is meaningless to cultivate wrong wisdom that increases the five poisons. It is meaningless to practice the Great Vehicle while being separated from the path of compassion. It is meaningless to meditate without realizing the nature of one's own mind. It is meaningless to receive instructions that one does not practice oneself. It is meaningless to do benefit for others without being embraced by bodhicitta. It is meaningless to take vows without having a mind of protection. In general, although there are many meaningless things, even if they are unnecessary, foolish people will not listen, so it is said. Guru Padmasambhava said: Practicing Dharma requires four non-retrogression. Jomo asked: What are they? Guru Padmasambhava said: By meditating on the remembrance of death, one will not regress for the sake of this life. By greatly meditating on the results of the ten non-virtuous actions, one will not regress to the three lower realms. Meditating on loving-kindness

By that, one will not regress to the Lesser Vehicle. By meditating on emptiness, one will not regress to samsara. In general, to practice Dharma, one must turn away from attachment to this world, it is said. Guru Rinpoche said: There are four things that will not happen in Dharma practice, so they should be abandoned. Jo-mo asked, "What are those?" The Guru replied: If one does not remember death, there will be no time to practice Dharma. If one does not believe in karma and its results, and does not abandon non-virtue, there will be no time to attain higher realms and liberation. If one does not generate bodhicitta for the sake of sentient beings, and only desires to attain liberation for oneself, one will not attain perfect enlightenment. In general, if one does not turn away from the activities of this life, there will be no true Dharma at all. There is no one who can renounce the world, it is said. Guru Rinpoche said: In Dharma practice, it is important to extract the essence, it is said. Jo-mo asked, "What is that?" The Guru replied: To extract the essence from the body, which has no essence, is to maintain pure morality. To extract the essence from possessions, which have no essence, is to give with generosity, accompanied by bodhicitta. To extract the essence from accumulations, which have no essence, is to accumulate the cause, the accumulation of merit, and the result, the accumulation of wisdom. To extract the essence from listening, which has no essence, is to strive to practice diligently. If one does not know how to extract the essence, it is only worldly activity, it is said. Guru Rinpoche said: In Dharma practice, five non-mistakes are necessary, it is said. Jo-mo asked, "What are those?" The Guru replied: One must guard the vows and commitments one has taken without any mistake. One must always practice loving-kindness, compassion, and bodhicitta without any mistake. One must practice karma and its results without any mistake, avoiding even the slightest negative action. One must meditate on the Guru as the Buddha without any mistake, always meditating on him on the crown of one's head. In general, in all Dharma practice, one must meditate on emptiness without any mistake, realizing that all phenomena are the nature of the union of emptiness. Guru Rinpoche said: In Dharma practice, one must practice through the gate of the six paramitas, it is said. Jo-mo asked, "How should one practice?" The Guru replied: If one does not hold any thought of miserliness in one's mind, that is the paramita of generosity. Abandoning afflictions through skillful means is the paramita of morality. Not generating anger and resentment
