Having nothing is the perfection of patience. Having no laziness and sloth is the perfection of diligence. Having no distraction and attachment to the taste of meditation is the perfection of meditation. Having no appearance of any elaboration is the perfection of wisdom, so it is said. Guru Padmasambhava said: There are three kinds of busyness in practicing Dharma. The nun asked: What are those three? The master said: Not being diligent in other things, but being busy for the sake of the next life, this is the lowest person, and there is no way not to obtain the heavenly realm. Being disgusted with all of samsara, and being busy with virtuous deeds, this is the middle person, and there is no way not to obtain liberation. Being busy with cultivating the mind of enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings, this is the highest person, and there is no way not to obtain perfect enlightenment. In general, being as busy in the morning as in the evening, these are all for this life, this life has afflictions, and in the next life, there is nowhere to go but the three lower realms. Guru Padmasambhava said: All those who practice Dharma are very sad about the death of relatives and friends, but it should not be so. There are five things that Dharma practitioners should be sad about. The nun asked: What are those five? The master said: If you are separated from a good master, you should be sad and perform a death offering; if you are separated from a good Dharma friend, you should be sad and accumulate merit; if you have decline and damage, you should be sad and perform confession and restoration; if you are sick for a long time and cannot perform virtuous deeds, you should be sad and rely on a lama; if your mind is confused by the eight worldly dharmas, you should be sad and abandon attachment from the bottom of your heart. In general, for those who do not understand that compounded things are impermanent, sadness will never end, and they will not awaken. Guru Padmasambhava said: Practicing Dharma requires four kinds of farming. The nun asked: What are those four? The master said: Tame the wild horse of your mind with unwavering faith; apply the fertilizer of transforming the mind with meditation; plant the good seed of being seized by the root of virtue and the mind of enlightenment; use the plow ox of the union of skillful means and wisdom, and the diligent person should use the plow of wisdom to completely eradicate the five poisons and all thoughts. If you do this, the sprout of enlightenment will grow.
