Since it pervades everything, it is called "Ma"; since there is no grasping or conceptualization in the mind, it is "Tor." Like the five desirable qualities descending upon the eyes of the four guests, it is called "Ma." If the Torma is classified, there are six types: Outer Torma, Inner Torma, Secret Torma, Meaning Torma, Sign Torma, and Symbolic Torma, totaling six. The container for offering the Torma is either three or generally six. Among them, the container for the Outer Torma is the five precious substances; the container for the Inner Torma is a Kapala (skull cup) with auspicious marks; the container for the Secret Torma is a tortoise shell; the container for the Meaning Torma is the sky; the container for the Sign Torma is the world of outer containers; the container for the Symbolic Torma is any available container.

It is said that this is surrounded by... Regarding the occasions of the inner Torma and the secret Torma: The main guest of service is the Lama Yidam, surrounded by the deities of the outer and inner mandalas. The main guest of merit is the four classes of Dakinis, surrounded by male and female lineage Dharma protectors. The guest of compassion is the parents of the three times, past, present, and future, surrounded by the six classes of sentient beings. The main guest of karmic debt is one's own guardian deity, surrounded by the eight classes of gods, demons, and spirits, to whom offerings should be made, it is said. The times for offering Torma are: the eighth, thirtieth, twenty-second, and fourth days of the lunar month. Also, for one class, the pure lineage Gonpo Torma is offered during the day; the Torma of the Dakini sisters is offered at dusk and dawn; the Torma of the flesh-eating spirits is offered at night; the Torma of the six classes of beings is offered at any time; the Torma for the pretas is offered at dusk, it is said. The places for offering Torma are: the wisdom deities who are beyond the world, and the worldly guests, it is said. The qualities or benefits of Torma are twofold: in this life, longevity, freedom from illness, increase of children, and possession of enjoyment; in the next life, purification of obscurations, completion of the two great accumulations, and attainment of unsurpassed Bodhi, it is said. The activity of Torma is to dispel obstacles. Obstacles have three aspects: meaning, sign, and symbol. Symbolic obstacles obstruct this life, obstruct life and enjoyment, and are called obstacles of manifested illusion. Obstacles of signs are the five afflictions, which obstruct the form body. Obstacles of meaning are ignorance, which obstructs the Dharma body. In short, these obstacles are conceptual thoughts, which obstruct unsurpassed Bodhi. All these obstacles are dispelled by this Torma, therefore one must strive in the activity of Torma, it is said. The method of offering Torma is: to hold and offer. To hold and offer continuously is: the yogi holds in the evening and offers in the morning, holds in the morning and offers in the evening. To hold and offer temporarily is: when engaging in intense practice, holding the glorious Torma, the gods and protectors gather and siddhis are accomplished; offering the Dharma protector Torma, activities are swift and siddhis are bestowed; until the practice is completed, the Torma vessel is not cleaned, that is sufficient.
