Therefore, one will be reborn into any of the thirty-six types of pretas (hungry ghosts). If reborn there, one will always remain in a dark cave, unable to see one's own arms stretching and contracting, tormented by hunger and thirst, bones rattling, and sparks flying from the joints. Even after hundreds and thousands of eons, one will not hear the names of food and drink, let alone find something to eat and drink. One sees food as pus and blood, sees burning flames, sees things that others cannot enjoy, and guarding, etc., with no chance to endure suffering. It is said that one is reborn there. The cause of being reborn there is stinginess and obstructing generosity. Stinginess is not being willing to give oneself. Obstructing generosity means obstructing others from giving. Guru Rinpoche said: By committing small misdeeds, one will be reborn into any of the thirty-six types of animals. If reborn there, one will be foolish and dull, unable to be independent, enslaved by others, and although suffering, one can only bear it oneself, with no protector, always fearing being killed by others, and before dying, one's flesh and blood are eaten and drunk by others. And so on, animals also have various terrifying sufferings. These scattered animals that depend on humans have the least suffering. Most of the animals that live in the outer oceans and other places have very great suffering. It is said that the cause of being reborn there is not fearing small sins. If one is reborn in five places such as border areas, because there is no Dharma, one can only go to the lower realms in the next life. If reborn there, one will experience the suffering of the three lower realms as before. Guru Rinpoche said: The so-called heavenly bliss is only said because it is only slightly less painful compared to the suffering of the three lower realms. In reality, even in heaven itself there is no bliss, only suffering. Humans have various sufferings such as birth, old age, sickness, and death. Among them, the first is the suffering of birth: Initially, when the alaya consciousness is wrapped in the essence of the parents' blood, it feels like entering a dark island, or a great mountain.

It feels like being pressed under a stone. Then, when the body is able to move, when full from food, it feels like being squeezed between rocks. When hungry, it feels like being hung up. When violently impacted, it feels like being squeezed between rocks. Then, at the time of birth, it feels like being squeezed out from between rocks. When falling to the ground, it feels like the suffering of being skinned and thrown into a pit full of thorns, or like being trampled by hooves. The suffering is very great. Then, in childhood, there is hunger, thirst, pain in the hands and feet, and great suffering. Then, even after growing up, there are various sufferings of searching exhaustedly for what is lost and not finding it, and various sufferings of fearing that what is possessed will be stolen or robbed, and various sufferings of fearing encountering enemies, and various sufferings of fearing separation from loved ones, and merely taking this aggregate of suffering, it is a great burden of suffering, unable to endure heat, unable to endure cold, unable to endure hunger, unable to endure thirst, and so on, he said. Then there are various sufferings of old age. Because of aging, all the functions of the senses and body are lost. When walking, one staggers; when standing, one cannot stand up. The crown of the head is bald, and the body is dark, filled with gray spots. Because of the increase of white hair and wrinkles, one is not liked by everyone. One will become an object of ridicule for the children of the neighborhood, he said. There are various unbearable sufferings of illness; whichever of the five senses of the body is ill, if it is like the eyes that are ill, one will think, 'If it were not the eyes but something else that was ill, it would be better,' but nothing can be endured. The radiance of the body diminishes, the senses and strength decline, and ultimately wealth, grain, and large amounts of possessions are exhausted, so it is very painful. The suffering of death is that, at the time of death, it feels like being cut with a knife, the suffering of severing the vital points. The body is weak, the mind is unclear, the warmth is low, and one does not know how to breathe, he said. Guru Padmasambhava said: The suffering of death is more terrifying than the suffering of hell. The incarnate teacher said: It is said that in the heavenly realm of Tsogyal (Yeshe Tsogyal) there is happiness and joy, but even there, there is the nature of suffering.
