To transform with the three, there are four: loving-kindness, compassion, and the mind of enlightenment. These are identified as the three baskets and taught as the three trainings. First, loving-kindness is: Knowing pleasant parents, meditating on having happiness. (Meaning) For any pleasant object, thinking of making them have happiness is worldly loving-kindness. Knowing those sentient beings as parents and meditating on making them have happiness is Dharma loving-kindness. Thus, knowing all sentient beings as parents and generating the mind to benefit them is the samadhi of loving-kindness. Continuously generating this is called immeasurable or great loving-kindness. Among these three: Loving-kindness focused on sentient beings is: Knowing all sentient beings as parents and generating the mind to make them have happiness. Loving-kindness focused on Dharma is: Although nothing is established in the ultimate sense, in the conventional realm of dreamlike illusion, generating the mind to make these mothers have happiness. Loving-kindness without an object is: Thus, at the time of meditating, knowing the nature of oneself and others as emptiness, free from elaboration like the sky, shining without ceasing with loving-kindness, the nature unestablished and empty, the essence without thought or object, the three spheres completely pure. Second is compassion: Thinking of saving sentient beings, parents, from suffering. Meaning: Seeing all sentient beings, parents, as suffering, generating unbearable compassion, the thought of wanting to save them from that suffering is worldly compassion. Knowing all sentient beings as parents, and generating unbearable compassion for them being in suffering, the mind of wanting to save them from suffering is Dharma compassion. For the suffering of these mothers, wanting to free them from suffering with compassion is the samadhi of compassion. Generating it continuously at that time is called immeasurable or great compassion. Among these three: Compassion focused on sentient beings is: Thinking of freeing sentient beings from suffering (Sanskrit: duḥkha, Devanagari: दुःख, Romanization: duhkha, literal meaning: suffering). Compassion focused on Dharma is: Although nothing is established in the ultimate sense, in the conventional realm of illusion, thinking of freeing them from suffering. Compassion without an object is: Thus, at the time of meditating, oneself and others

Since all phenomena are known to be empty in nature, like the sky, the uninterrupted radiance is compassion; since the nature is unestablished, it remains in emptiness; the essence is unobservable, unthinkable, and the three spheres are completely pure. The third is the mind of enlightenment: taking and practicing the thought of wanting to attain Buddhahood. Therefore, there are two types of mind generation: aspiration and engagement. First, aspiration is: the thought of wanting to attain complete Buddhahood for the sake of all sentient beings is the mind of aspiration. Thus, vowing and causing the unattained to be attained is the generation of the mind of aspiration; abandoning its opposing factors is the discipline of aspiration. Second, engagement is: wanting to practice its conduct in order to attain Buddhahood for the sake of others is the mind of engagement; thus vowing and causing the continuum to obtain discipline is the generation of the mind of engagement; constantly practicing its conduct and abandoning opposing factors is the discipline of engagement. In short, the thought of sentient beings wanting to attain Buddhahood is the aspiring Bodhicitta; putting it into practice and practicing it is the engaging Bodhicitta. Therefore, aspiration is important, because if one is familiar with the aspiring Bodhicitta, engagement will naturally arise; if aspiration is not generated, it is impossible to practice engagement, because there is no cause without effect. Therefore, to attain perfect Buddhahood, one must have ultimate Bodhicitta; to generate ultimate Bodhicitta, one must have relative Bodhicitta; for that, one must have compassion; to generate compassion, one must have loving-kindness; loving-kindness arises from knowing sentient beings as parents. Therefore, the essence of the Mahayana path is loving-kindness, compassion, and the mind of enlightenment, which are indispensable. Relying on these, all the benefits of oneself and others can be accomplished, which is the key to transforming the path, just as a rein controls a horse. Fourth, identifying these as the three baskets and explaining them as the three trainings: three minds, three baskets, three trainings, three practices. Since all sentient beings equal to the sky are my parents and have immeasurable kindness, thinking of making them happy is the mind of loving-kindness; these mothers are experiencing various sufferings, how pitiful, thinking of freeing them from these sufferings is the mind of compassion; May these mothers have happiness and be free from suffering.
