The reason is to live alone in a monastery. The benefits of living in solitude are inconceivable: it becomes the best service to the Buddhas, generates renunciation of samsara, separates from the eight worldly dharmas, does not increase afflictions, and generates samadhi in the mindstream. As stated in the "Moon Lamp Sutra": "Food, drink, and clothing, flowers, incense, and garlands, cannot serve the supreme king. Whoever desires perfect enlightenment, and renounces evil conditioned beings, for the sake of sentient beings, abandons seven steps in a solitary place, this is far superior in merit. Likewise, conditioned things always cause aversion, likewise, there is no desire for anything in the world, and outflows do not increase." It also says: "Abandon liking for towns and cities, always rely on solitude and forests, like a rhinoceros always practice non-duality, before long you will attain supreme samadhi." And so on, countless benefits arise. One must meditate while living in solitude, the fault of not meditating is: although hearing understands the general meaning, if one does not practice through meditation, one cannot abandon what should be abandoned, nor accomplish what should be accomplished. As stated in the "Treasury": "No matter how profound the words spoken, they will not accord with the meaning. Through meditation, the nature of dharma becomes meaningful." Therefore, it is like dying of thirst beside a great river, or giving food to others but starving to death oneself. As stated in the "Lalitavistara Sutra": "For example, a swimmer is carried away by the water, even if the knowledge of swimming is in his mind, he cannot be liberated without swimming. Knowing but not meditating, the Dharma is the same." And so on, it is explained with many examples. The benefits of meditation are: compared to listening, reading, or doing virtuous deeds for eons, meditating for just a moment has greater merit. As stated in the "Sutra on the Exposition of Suchness": "Shariputra, compared to listening for one kalpa, meditating on the samadhi of suchness for just the time it takes to snap one's fingers increases merit. Shariputra, therefore, diligently advise others to practice the samadhi of suchness."

It is said. Also, the Sutra of Great Realization Expanded states: If one enters into meditative absorption for a moment, it is more meaningful than giving life to the people of the three realms. Furthermore, the Sutra of the Precious Crown states: More meritorious than hearing and contemplating for many eons is to meditate on the meaning of the Dharma for one day. Why is that? Because it causes one to be far separated from the path of birth and death. Such things are extensively taught. The accumulation of merit and all the Dharmas of the path are gathered in meditative stabilization, which is frequently mentioned in the scriptures and treatises. Lord Atisha said: When the mind is stable in single-pointed equipoise, physical and verbal virtuous actions should not be undertaken. He said that if the mind becomes stable in equipoise, physical and verbal virtuous deeds become a cause of distraction and should be abandoned. The third, the stages of purifying the continuum, are five: Refuge, which protects from the suffering of samsara and the wrong path; Bodhicitta, which transforms whatever is done into the path of the Great Vehicle; Mandala, which perfects the accumulation of merit and wisdom; Vajrasattva meditation and recitation, which purifies the obscurations of the vessel; and Guru Yoga, which causes the blessings of the essence to enter. The first is: The object to which one goes for refuge is, outwardly, the Three Jewels; inwardly, the Three Roots; and secretly, the three: essence, nature, and compassion. For what purpose does one go for refuge? For the sake of saving oneself and all other sentient beings from the suffering of samsara. Until when does one go for refuge? Until one's intention becomes united with that of the Three Jewels. How does one go for refuge? Sit on a comfortable seat. Calm the mind and focus on the following: The place where you are is the pure land of Brahma's Drum Sound, complete with all its splendor. In the sky in front of you is a wish-fulfilling tree with five branches. The branches are rich with leaves, flowers, fruits, and so on. On the central branch is a lion throne, a lotus, and a sun and moon cushion, arranged in an especially excellent manner. On it, the root guru himself is the embodiment of all the gurus of the lineage, appearing as the Great Vajradhara, dark blue, in union with the red consort Yogini, holding a curved knife and a skull cup. Complete with the characteristics of the enjoyment body, radiating infinite rays of light. On the branch in front are the deities of the mandala of the special Buddha, the peaceful and wrathful yidams. On the right branch
