How can one endure the unbearable suffering of existence? Even when told so, one does not feel even a little sadness. Is my heart a great iron lump? Or is it like a stone, devoid of feeling? As it is said, remembering from the heart, one should strongly generate sadness and renunciation. Fourth, by contemplating the cause and effect of karma, one must abandon all non-virtues and strive single-mindedly in the Dharma. As it is said in the White Lotus of Compassion: "The world is made by karma, transformed by karma. Sentient beings are made by karma, born from the cause of karma, distinguished by karma." As it is said, all of samsara and nirvana, happiness and suffering, arise from karma. The root of karma is ignorance. The nature of karma, generated by the thought of grasping and appearance, is the two types of white and black karma, from which the fruits of happiness and suffering arise. Among them, the extremely dark karma, the ten non-virtues, as it is said in the Treasury of Knowledge: "From that, having summarized the main points, according to what is appropriate, virtuous and non-virtuous, the paths of karma are explained as ten." Thus, killing, taking what is not given, sexual misconduct, lying, divisive speech, harsh speech, idle talk, covetousness, malice, and wrong view are the ten non-virtues. The opposite of these is virtuous karma, which is entirely white. From these, both thought and action are encompassed by virtue, and the great, medium, and small produce the fruits of gods, demigods, and humans. Similarly, practicing the three non-virtues of great, medium, and small results in rebirth in the three lower realms of hell, hungry ghosts, and animals. Furthermore, like saving a life for the sake of wealth or use, the thought is dark, but the action is virtuous, resulting in a mixture of happiness and suffering. Speaking a lie to save a life generates the fruit of happiness. Meditating on the samadhi of absorption, through the unwavering karma, causes rebirth in the higher realms. In short, no matter what kind of karma, great or small, is practiced, its maturation will never be in vain. As it is said in the Sutra of One Hundred Karmas: "The karmas of embodied beings, even after hundreds of eons, will not be lost. When the conditions gather and the time arrives, they will surely ripen into their fruit." Thus, practicing virtuous karma experiences the fruit of happiness, and committing sinful karma experiences the fruit of suffering. As it is said in the Lesser Mindfulness Sutra: "Through virtue, happiness is attained. From non-virtue, suffering arises. Thus, the fruits of virtuous and non-virtuous karma are clearly shown." And so on.

In the Sutra of the Ground it says: From bitter seeds, bitter fruits will arise. From sweet seeds, sweet fruits will arise. By this analogy, the ripening of evil is bitter, and the ripening of virtue is sweet, which the wise should know. Thus it is said. Furthermore, it is said that even small non-virtues will cause one to experience great suffering as a result. As it is said in the Collection of Utterances: Even having done a small evil, in the next world there will be great fear, and it will cause great destruction, like poison that has gone into the stomach. Thus it is said. Even having done a small virtue, it will bring forth a great fortune as a result. As it is said in that very text: Even having done a small fortune, in the next world it will lead to great happiness, and it will also accomplish great purposes, like grains that ripen in abundance. Thus it is said. In the Vinaya-agama it says: Even for small sins, do not despise them thinking they are harmless. Even small sparks of fire will burn a pile of grass as big as a mountain. Even for small virtues, do not despise them thinking they are useless. By collecting drops of water, a large vessel will gradually be filled. Thus it is said, therefore one must generate firm faith in the law of karma, and strive to adopt virtue and abandon evil from the smallest details. The second topic is showing the faults of busyness and the benefits of meditation. It is said that in order to practice the path, one must abandon the distractions of busyness. The definition of busyness is being distracted by meaningless activities with body, speech, and mind. The cause of busyness is attachment to grasping at self and what belongs to self. The faults of busyness, in general, are twenty in number as explained in the Sutra of Encouraging Higher Intention. In particular, there are many faults in being attached to children, food, wealth, relatives, attendants, gain, and honor. Since all attachment and clinging to desirable objects is the work of demons, one should think of it as meaningless and abandon it. As it says in Resting the Mind Itself: Desiring meditation, abandon distraction and busyness. The pleasures of objects are like autumn clouds, unstable like lightning, of a moving nature, impermanent enjoyments, like a castle of illusions. Never trustworthy, abandon it, and quickly rely on the peaceful forest edge. Thus it is said. Being separated from those distractions of busyness is the definition of solitude.
