As it is said, 'The one with great wisdom, in an instant, holds all dharmas in their entirety, and directly realizes all dharmas.' This transmission guidance, although merely serving as a condition for liberation within the framework of history, and only superficially similar to others, is superior in meaning because it reveals its own nature through symbolic meaning, thus transforming into a genuine path of liberation. The General Tantra states: 'The meaning of history unlocks the general essence, imparts symbolic meaning, blending understanding. This very transmission is greater than liberation.' Thus, for individuals of supreme capacity, this very transmission simultaneously achieves liberation upon hearing. Therefore, this guidance, which is akin to seeing and hearing Buddhahood, is proclaimed as the foremost guidance. Secondly, the actual instruction possessing that history is presented in three parts: preliminaries, main practice, and subsequent instructions. The first part also has three aspects: common preliminaries, specific preliminaries, and uncommon preliminaries. The first of these is: The preliminary to the second great guidance, which, through the essential instruction of the guru, introduces the individual, the basis, into the framework, like entering the palace of a universal monarch, is the teaching that reveals this. Its essence is the mind of enlightenment, aspiring to meaning and engaging in means. Its definition is that it precedes the subsequent instructions. Its divisions include common and uncommon, and so forth. For example, just as cultivation must precede planting crops. Here, too, it is necessary to have the five perfections of place, time, teacher, retinue, and Dharma. At this time, the gateway initiation, the guru's secret assembly torma initiation, opens the Dharma gate with a single sheet of essential points. Incorporating the instructions into the framework actually has three aspects: remembering impermanence, relying on and honoring the guru, and actually engaging in the preliminary practices. The first of these is: As the cause for entering the Dharma and the primary companion for encouraging virtuous conduct, remembering impermanence is crucial. That is, using the ten similes of illusion, dewdrop, water bubble, mirage, lamp flame, dream, lightning, star, cloud, and city of gandharvas, it symbolizes that the outer world and the inner sentient beings are all impermanent, and that it will certainly befall oneself, so there is no certainty when death will come. At the time of death, the only infallible protector is the supreme Dharma, but because the Lesser Vehicle with effort is bound to the wrong path, one should generate faith in the truly certain meaning and the qualified guru who teaches it.

It should be like a thirsty person seeking water. Although not explicitly stated in the scriptures, in accordance with the general teaching order tradition, the basis for contemplating impermanence is this precious human body with eight freedoms and ten endowments, which is more precious than even the gods, and more difficult to obtain than a wish-fulfilling jewel. After death, black and white karma follows, and cause and effect are infallible. One will not encounter what one has not done, and what one has done will not be wasted. From virtuous actions, happiness arises, and from evil actions, the fruit of suffering arises. No matter where one is born in the cycle of existence, one cannot escape the nature of the three sufferings. These principles should be well contemplated and integrated into one's mind. Second, to rely on and respect the Guru: The Dharmakaya of the Buddha is free from elaboration and beyond conceptualization. One does not have the fortune to be a disciple of the Sambhogakaya. With unwavering faith, one should firmly believe that only the Nirmanakaya is one's Guru, generate the perception of the Buddha, offer one's body, life, possessions, and everything in a mandala, and serve and respect the Guru to the best of one's ability. Third, entering the actual practice of preliminaries: The scriptures state six practices: refuge, bodhicitta, accumulation of merit, self-blessing, mandala, preliminary undistracted prayer, and receiving empowerment. However, in the practice of the lineage, undistractedness is included in everything. Adding the practice of Vajrasattva meditation and recitation, there are six practices. Turning away from the wrong path is refuge, turning away from the inferior path is bodhicitta, accumulating merit is practicing the ten branches, purifying obscurations is Vajrasattva meditation and recitation, making oneself suitable as a vessel for secret mantra is self-blessing, and relying on the mandala to invite, pray, and receive the four empowerments is the guidance. First, the objects of refuge, externally are the Three Jewels, internally are the Three Roots, and secretly are the Three Kayas. All of these are gathered into the single Guru Vajradhara. Therefore, it is the refuge field of the All-Encompassing Jewel Lineage. Clearly visualize: The place where you are is a pure land, and in the sky in front of you, on a lotus stem, sun, and moon, the essence is your kind root Guru, and the form is Padmasambhava, Skull Garland Power Yoga, Guhyasamaja, and Akshobhya Buddha, with a blue body, one face, and two hands. The right hand holds a golden vajra at the heart, and the left hand holds a bell at the waist.
