Furthermore, merely hearing the instructions of oral teachings, even if an unprophesied state arises, one mistakenly believes it to be the Dharmakaya when realization has not dawned. It is like meditating on excrement as gold and then using it to chase after cats and dogs. One considers hearing unnecessary and views it as a fault. If one does not hear about the extent of hearing, whether vast or small, there is absolutely no way to practice. Even practice itself must first be heard. Some people assert that hearing means that if one does not know many terms from books, such as sound measurements, then one has not heard. Generally, even if one does not know many books, these instructions of oral teachings are all condensed by the great accomplished ones from the profound and essential meanings of the scriptures and treatises, and established in the mind. Knowing a hundred books is also a way to establish the mind. Its meaning is that a qualified lama condenses the many into one, and on a single verse of four lines, condenses the meaning of sutras, tantras, and oral instructions, and then, according to the student's mind, tames the student skillfully. That is hearing. Generally, although the knowable is vast and numerous, it is condensed into the three: ground, path, and fruition. Hearing is vast, but it shows its meaning. It is small, but it shows its meaning. The ground includes the way of abiding and the way of delusion. The path includes the gross and subtle aspects of abandonment and cultivation. The fruition includes the inseparability of the two wisdoms shown as one. Taming the mind is hearing. Vast hearing is said to be grasping the key to attaining Buddhahood. If that is grasped, even small hearing is acceptable. It is said that those like Tshe and Ldan-pa Lam-phran-bstan, and the fool Lteng-rgyas Od-srung, were liberated through each single word. Second, the fault of not meditating is that even if hearing is vast and understanding is good, if one does not meditate, the conceptual thought of self-grasping within cannot be cut off. Although one speaks of selflessness to others, one clings to the fortress of self-grasping. It is like being carried away by water and dying of thirst in the water. Or, it is like giving food and drink to others but dying of starvation oneself. Or, like a blind person being skilled in music and dance and making those with eyes happy, but not seeing because one has no eyes. The understanding gained from hearing and contemplating the scriptures, treatises, and oral instructions makes others happy when spoken to them, but because one has not experienced it oneself, the conceptual thought of self-grasping rushes into one's mind and cannot be cut off. It is like dying of thirst in water. Even if hearing is vast, it is not an antidote to self-grasping.
