Request. By offering pleasing offerings to the Lama, one will attain the wisdom of omniscience. Even if one diligently studies listening and contemplation for many eons, if one does not grasp the Lama's meditation-born instructions, there is no key to liberating the continuum. The subjects of the Sutras, Vinaya, and Abhidharma are profound and difficult to understand, but even the co-emergent wisdom relies on the Lama's symbolic methods. A qualified Lama who possesses all complete qualities is no different from the actual Buddha, so one must rely on him diligently with sincere faith and respect. Whoever serves and attends to the Lama, and through devout faith visualizes the Lama on their crown and prays, the qualities of all the Buddhas bestowed by the Lama are of great significance. Secondly, the profound path of Lama Yoga actually has three aspects: the outer Lama who introduces the meaning through symbols, the inner Lama who experiences the nature of reality, and the secret Lama who realizes the meaning. For beginners, the outer Lama is very important. That is, the Lamas of the lineage are the common Lamas. The one who guides oneself into the door of Dharma is the guiding Lama. The one who bestows the Pratimoksha vows and the secret mantra initiation is the Lama of vows and empowerment. If the vows are broken, the one who restores and replenishes them is the Lama of restoring broken vows. The one who explains the scriptures and teaches listening and contemplation is the Lama who liberates knowledge. The one who teaches the oral transmission, the oral instructions, and the pith instructions is the Lama of pith instruction transmission. Although Lamas are divided into six types, they all converge in one's own kind root Guru. The Lama who introduces the meaning through symbols, who is the embodiment of all qualities, how should one practice him? There are two ways: to practice the Lama as he is, and to practice by transforming his appearance. Firstly, if there is no doubt about the Lama's profound qualities, then whether he is young, old, a householder, or a monastic, one can practice without conflict. Secondly, to practice by transforming his appearance, if one has not gained certainty about the Lama's profound qualities and has not dispelled doubts, then one can transform him into the form of Shakyamuni Buddha, Vajradhara, or Padmasambhava, etc., according to one's preference. On top of that, the tradition of visualizing the Lamas of the lineage as stacked layers has two styles: according to

Or meditate according to the Outer Tantra Mahamudra tradition. That is, practice diligently for three, five, or seven days, according to whichever of the extensive, intermediate, or concise methods of meditation, recitation, and instruction one prefers. Second, the Inner Tantra relies on a guru with experience of realization, and third, a guru of the meaning of realization. The details will be explained below during the actual practice of Trekchö and Tögal. Seventh, to inspire those who enter the profound path, there are two aspects to showing the benefits of meditation: the actual benefits and the faults of not meditating. First, even if one cannot actually practice the profound path, having faith and rejoicing in meditation is more virtuous than placing all sentient beings in the ten white virtues. Moreover, in the future, realizing the nature of mind and gradually becoming familiar with it becomes the cause for attaining Buddhahood. Even entering the path in this life and abiding in a single session of calm abiding, without conceptual mind, is said in the sutras to be more virtuous than giving life to all beings in the three realms. Abiding in non-conceptual mind and cultivating it without attachment gives rise to the realization of insight. Remaining in that state of realization, even for the duration of a finger snap, is more virtuous than giving to all sentient beings in the great trichiliocosm, constantly placing them in the wisdom of discipline, concentration, wisdom, and liberation, and placing them in self-realized enlightenment. This is stated in the scriptures. Thus, by abiding in the state of arising realization for each moment, one gradually cuts off all that is to be abandoned and manifests the Buddha fruit to be attained. If so, does that meditation also need to be related to listening and contemplation? In general, even on a single verse of four lines, the three, listening, contemplation, and meditation, can be complete, and the one that can be connected in the continuum is the teaching of the Buddha. First, one must listen. If one does not listen, there is nothing to contemplate. If one does not contemplate, one cannot understand the meaning in the continuum. If one does not understand, one does not know how to meditate. If one does not meditate, the words understood by listening are different, and if one does not practice, one does not realize the meaning of the mind within. Therefore, one cannot cut off attachment to desirable qualities outwardly, and one cannot resist the battlefield of afflictions in between. Therefore, knowing the key points of what to accept and reject and meditating on that meaning is more important than much listening and contemplation that clings to the end of words. Some people, due to the fault of little listening, cannot cut off superimposition.
