One should not lose focus. Meditate on this for three days. Filling is: exhale three times. Then inhale three times and press down as much as possible. When it is unbearable, release it with a sigh. Rest for a while. Do this for three days. Second, formless stillness has three aspects: tightening, loosening, and alternating tightening and loosening. The first is: keep the body posture as before. While gazing intently at the sky in front, without meditating on any object, tighten the awareness sharply on the sky in front without distraction. Rest when it becomes tiring. Sometimes, investigate what the awareness that is tightening is like, what it is. Then tighten sharply again and investigate. Alternate between these two. This will eliminate the fault of dullness and drowsiness. In all activities, maintain mindfulness without distraction. Do this for one or three days. Second, loosening is: then again, keep the body posture as before. Lower the gaze and loosen the mind gently, without thinking of this as an object of meditation, just loosen and let it be natural, loosen the mind and there is nothing to meditate on. Just without distraction, remain in the natural state, the inherent quality, the natural disposition, the way it is, without fabrication or alteration. Abide in a relaxed state, or unravel and loosen. In this way, look at where the one who is loosening is. If it is not the mind, then look at what the one who is loosening the mind is like, look at yourself, and then loosen again. This will give rise to good abiding, and it is also possible to recognize awareness. Do this for one or three days. Third, alternating tightening and loosening is: then again, keep the body posture as before. Tighten the awareness firmly and tighten gently without distraction. Then loosen gently and release widely. Then tighten again, then loosen again. In this way, alternate tightening and loosening and meditate. Sometimes gaze intently at the expanse of the sky. Awareness also has nothing to meditate on, but the intention should be focused sharply. Then loosen. Sometimes gaze sharply to the right, focusing awareness on the expanse without distraction. Sometimes focus to the left, sometimes focus downwards, alternating these in each session. Sometimes observe what the awareness that is focusing the intention is like, awareness observing itself. Sometimes the mind falls into the center of the heart.

Rest in a relaxed manner. (During practice) sometimes, like the sky, rest in a relaxed manner in the boundless expanse. Thus, by alternating in various ways, as a sign of the mind settling down: wherever awareness rests, rest in a relaxed, open, and focused manner, and thus calm abiding will arise. However, if one loses mindfulness and becomes dull, that is the fault of agitation or drowsiness. Therefore, arouse awareness, heighten alertness, and change perspective. If scattered and excited, lower the perspective. Relaxation is crucial. If thoughts like "This is meditation, this is a thought" arise, that is the fault of dullness. Therefore, meditate by alternating between tightening and loosening, and recognize the meditator. Furthermore, recognize the faults of calm abiding and eliminate direct faults. For this, practice for three days, etc. Second, the nature of calm abiding is like a lamp that is not moved by the wind: whatever thoughts arise, abide naturally and openly in their own state in the present moment. Wherever awareness rests, it should be stable and unwavering. Unstained by agitation, drowsiness, or sinking, awareness should be clear and bright. Wherever awareness focuses, it should be focused and sharp. Unmoved by sudden thoughts, this is uprightness. Therefore, on the path of accumulation, the three experiences of bliss, clarity, and non-thought arise: the mind abiding in a state of non-thought is calm abiding. Its nature is without thoughts clinging to external objects, therefore it is non-thought. In this state, the appearance of sense objects does not cease, but is clear, without the sting of thoughts, and naturally abides in bliss, this is bliss. If one clings to these three experiences, one will go astray. If one does not cling, but cultivates them, one will manifest realization. Third, the divisions of calm abiding are two: with outflows and without outflows. The first: the above-mentioned characteristics of having the experience of bliss, clarity, and non-thought, can be divided into nine successive states of samadhi. To abandon the conceptual thoughts of the desire realm, there are four dhyana samadhis. To abandon the conceptual thoughts of the form realm, there are four formless samadhis. There is also the samadhi of cessation of the six aggregates. The four dhyana samadhis are the calm abiding that gives rise to insight, and are in accordance with the nature of the fourth dhyana samadhi, and are the most supreme among all worldly samadhis. The four formless samadhis are the wrong path of samadhi. The samadhi of cessation is the samadhi of the shravakas' peace. Like that
