Or the nature of being mixed. A drop of light shines brightly like a medium-sized butter lamp, the color is blue and clear, the touch is warm, it does not touch the back, nor does it touch the chest, clearly visualize it at the position of the heart. Focus awareness on this, and cut off distractions from the clear appearance. If distracted, clearly establish the object of focus. In this state, let the mind rest in its natural state, the rest is the same as before. Do this for three days. If you cannot grasp these, the third is to hold the mind on letters and implements. For this, the posture and so on are the same as before. The object of focus is to focus awareness on letters such as A (ཨ,a,a) or Hūṃ (ཧཱུྃ,hūṃ,hum). In this state, let the mind rest in its natural state, Practice in short sessions and many times. Do this for three days. If this does not grasp the mind, then the posture and so on are the same. The object of focus is to focus awareness on implements such as the vajra and lotus. In this state, let the mind rest in its natural state. The conduct between sessions is as before. At this time, if awareness becomes scattered and cannot grasp the object of focus, it is because the wind element arises. Eat nutritious food, slightly relax the object of focus, rest for about a day, and then practice will be calm. If boredom or dizziness occurs again, it is because awareness is biased. At times, tell the biographies of the Kagyu lineage, as well as wonderful stories and Dharma that generate renunciation and aversion to the world. Through these, the arising of calm abiding and insight in the mindstream is also possible. If this does not work, the fourth is to hold the mind on the deity's form. From then on, the rest is the same as before. The object of focus is to visualize in the space in front of you the form of the Teacher, the Bhagavan, the Tathagata Shakyamuni Buddha, adorned with marks and signs, the color like pure gold, covered with light and rays, shining brightly, focus on this and abide in samadhi. Do this for three days. Also, in the space in front of you, visualize the form of the noble Avalokiteśvara, white and bright, in his heart, focus without distraction on the white Hrīḥ (ཧྲཱིཿ,hrīḥ,hrih) syllable with a broken stroke. Do this for three days. Also, In the space in front of you, visualize the form of Vajrasattva, about one cubit high, appearing but without inherent existence, white and clear like polished crystal, having the nature of light, clearly and brightly visualize. Focus awareness on his heart, and clearly visualize. Practice in this way in short sessions and many times.

Practice this for three days. Because their intelligence differs, some people can grasp the essentials of settling the mind with just one, two, or three instructions. Others may need many instructions. Since there is no fixed rule, it seems that settling the mind can arise through the methods of instruction described here. Practice according to the student's experience and the guru's experience. Some may experience many thoughts arising and becoming more intense, which is a sign that the mind is being slightly controlled. At this time, if you become lazy because you are bored with meditation, or if you feel that meditation is not arising for me, that is dangerous. If you feel that thoughts are becoming coarser, and you want to give up, do not be bored, but slowly allow the instruction to tame it. The increase in thoughts is a sign that you are grasping the essentials of meditation. Before the mind settles, thoughts arise to the extent that they run wild, but because there is no mindfulness to guard them, they are allowed to run free. Now that many thoughts arise, it is because mindfulness sees them and recognizes them, which is a sign that you want to generate meditation. Slowly recognize those thoughts, do not block them, and do not follow them, but focus the mind on the object of meditation, and the thoughts will become finer and fewer. No matter what you do, if negative thoughts burst forth like a flood, then make the thoughts themselves the object of meditation. Whether it is desire, hatred, or bad habits, recognize it, and then relax and release the mind on that basis. Sometimes, when a thought arises, clearly recognize it and let it naturally dissolve. When a second thought arises, recognize it, do not follow any thought, and let it naturally dissolve. Afterward, relax and release in an unaltered state. By alternating in this way, thoughts will not continue like a stream, but will become fragmented, and negative thoughts will decrease, thereby generating good settling of the mind. For this, practice meditation for three days or so, according to your experience. If these people have not generated the characteristics of calm abiding in their minds, then the fifth step is to train in the breath and hold the mind. Training in the breath involves four methods: counting, exhaling, inhaling, and combining. Here, we will use counting and inhaling. Counting is: focus awareness on the breath as it moves in and out. When the breath moves outward, when the breath moves inward, simultaneously grasp the breath moving in and out, and in that state, let the mind rest naturally. Keep the sessions short and the number of repetitions high. All intervals
