O you all! At the time of death, if the perception of grasping and being grasped, which are illusory appearances, are purified, the wisdom will be as clear and bright as the sky. If even the slightest attachment or aversion arises towards the appearance of external phenomena, strong grasping and being grasped will arise. At the time when attachment and aversion arise, one will be deluded and wander in samsara. Therefore, between samsara and nirvana, there is nothing but the awareness and non-awareness of three moments. In one moment, one becomes completely enlightened. In one moment, one distinguishes differences. In one moment, one wanders in samsara. Thus it is said. Emaho! From the ground of all, which is not established in anything, arises the delusion of self-grasping ignorance. In the attachment and aversion of appearances, one wanders in samsara. Turning away from samsara is the self-arising path. Know the appearances of grasping and being grasped as mind. Mind itself is naturally uncorrected, and delusion subsides. When clinging is purified, one abides in the natural state of dharmata. The ultimate result is manifest enlightenment. The qualities of unceasing wisdom are perfected. This secret path of the three-word key is the instruction, the liberation of hidden words. It is the heart essence of Vajrasattva. In the mirror of clear mind, I, Orgyen Padmasambhava, have hidden this profound treasure of intention in the oral transmission without letters. May I meet with the son of my heart. Sarva Mangalam! May all be auspicious! The text of the signs and measures of decisive liberation. Homage to the Bhagavan, the Wisdom Deity of Awareness! The Great Perfection, the profound and secret All-Liberating, indicates the time for the fruit to arise. If these signs and measures of the path are absent, then practice is no different from the common paths and becomes lax. Diligence wanes, and the signs of accomplishment do not arise. Therefore, the text of signs is extremely important. For the practitioner of dharmata, the signs of the path will arise in this way, son. If a diligent practitioner practices this, the signs of the path for quickly attaining the fruit are twofold: uncertain and certain. The uncertain is called the sign of the ground, which is based on past connections and is present even without practice. Therefore, there is no need to cling to it, so it is not written here. The certain signs arise from practice, and they are also twofold: changing and unchanging. Changing is also twofold: actual and experiential. First, at the time of the preliminary practice of distinguishing samsara and nirvana, in reality, the body is about to collapse like the wall of a decaying house. Speech is exhausted like a depleted breath. The mind is frantic as if possessed by a demon.

I am the sign of separating samsara and nirvana. In experience, aversion arises towards the body, speech, and mind of samsara, the obscurations of the three realms are purified, and this is the sign of separating samsara. If it is not like this, it is a sign of not having practiced, so one should practice again. By relying on the leisure of body, speech, and mind, the body truly feels happiness, speech speaks what the heart desires, and all appearances in the mind are like the sky. Now, one thinks that nothing has been accomplished, compassion arises for sentient beings who have not awakened, and joy arises for the Dharma. In experience, one does not remember the body, does not feel the movement of breath, and is unwilling to leave the state of non-thought, thinking that this is meditation itself. This is the sign of having grasped a portion of the state of mind of nirvana. If it is not like this, it means one has not meditated, so one should put forth effort. These are only temporary signs, unstable and changing. After that, the signs of truly establishing awareness with the view are: truly, aversion arises towards the body, speech, and mind, visible to oneself and others, and one no longer clings to the affairs of this life. Speech becomes like a mute, unable to speak, the mind becomes weary of the dharmas of samsara, great devotion and longing arise for the lama, compassion arises for all beings, tears fall, one believes in karma and its results, and strives to abandon evil and accomplish good. The sign of experience is that the body becomes lighter. Sometimes one does not remember the body, does not remember the inhalation and exhalation of breath, and the mind feels that everything is empty and unreal. Sometimes one thinks that the Buddha is oneself. These are not permanent and unchanging, they will change. The sign of being unchanging is: in what is seen and heard, awareness is in the expanse of the sky, appearing clearly, without any change of brightness or darkness, and appearances do not scatter elsewhere, this is the degree to which awareness is nailed into the nature of reality. In the sign of the experience of knowing, wherever knowing scatters, one recognizes and is aware of one's own mind, and when thoughts scatter, they are gathered back into one's own awareness. Realizing that there is no true existence, that everything is like the sky, this is the sign of establishing appearances as mind with the view. If one can also grasp this in dreams, that is the sign of reaching the unchanging state. If one continues to practice this, within seven years, the contaminated body will disappear, and one will awaken as a nirmanakaya Buddha. Dream
