Although named as three, in essence, there is no difference between inner and outer, they are indivisibly mixed into one. This clear and transparent awareness is nothing other than this very clarity. There is nothing else that intervenes. Therefore, it is named Rigpa Dorje Lugu Gyü (Awareness, Vajra, String of Pearls). By directly seeing the nature of reality, one becomes certain of this, and because one has mastery over one's own awareness, one attains Buddhahood as a Nirmanakaya. Those confused sentient beings who do not understand in this way divide the mind into outer, inner, and secret, and so on. They grasp at outer appearances as being real and do not recognize them as mind, thus becoming confused with something else. They grasp at the middle as the body and, by looking at it, different appearances of the five senses arise. They do not recognize that these are one in the mind, but become confused by thinking they are different. They grasp at the idea that there is one self-grasping mind inside. Because they do not understand that these three are one, but separate them, they become confused and stray into samsara. Here, one realizes that all of these are indivisible and one. Therefore, the tantra says: "Three awarenesses, three meanings, without doubt; self-awareness, self-luminous, a string of pearls." As it says, the appearances of the outer five elements arise from one's own mind like waves in water, and one recognizes that they are one with the mind. If that were not the mind, then the five elements would have to arise as soon as awareness glances at the sky. But because it is the mind, the mind purifies itself in its own place and does not come. Therefore, one recognizes that the outer appearances are one's own mind. The inner five poisons, like rays of sunlight, arise from the mind and one recognizes that they are one with the mind. If the five poisons were not the mind, then they would have to arise when one abides in the sky. But because they are purified in the mind itself, they do not arise separately. One recognizes the five poisons as one's own mind. The appearances of the intermediate five senses arise in the mind and one recognizes that they are one with the mind. If those were not the mind, then the other five senses would have to arise as soon as awareness glances at the sky. But because it is the mind, it purifies itself in its own place and does not arise. Therefore, one recognizes that all thoughts are one's own mind. In this way, because one knows that all three, outer, inner, and secret, are in the mind, it is called "Three Awarenesses." Although named as three, in essence, one realizes that they are indivisible and one, without doubt. Therefore, it is "Three Meanings Without Doubt." The term Rigpa Dorje Lugu Gyü means that one knows that there is nothing apart from the mind, and that everything is one mind-stream. Because one clearly sees the nature of awareness in this way, one is certain, without remaining in the realm of conceptual thought and words.

O! Not being distracted from the meaning of that, but looking at the meaning itself, which is invisible, is called the view of being free from extremes. It is from the very nature of reality that the true view arises, as it is said in the scriptures: "Seeing the truth, one is liberated." This is the meaning of that. Secondly, the introduction to meditation, which does not fall into holding the mind, but is decisively determined in one place by the key point of direct experience, is as follows: The key points of body and speech are the same as before, but the way of looking with the mind is the way of seeing of the Sambhogakaya. Look at the sky directly with your eyes without distraction. There is nothing to look at there, because everything has already been known in the mind, so not being distracted from the meaning of the clarity of direct awareness is called meditation. Other than that, there is no meditation of holding onto objects. By staying in that state, all the ways in which direct awareness manifests are liberated into emptiness without attachment. Because the self-power of non-existent emptiness manifests without interruption, the initial experience is the manifestation of direct habitual patterns, appearing like an illusion. Then it increases more and more, and with the radiance of the wisdom of the Dharmadhatu, it appears like rainbows and halos of light. Dots and tiny particles, and the appearance of connected dots standing upright like spokes, appear like mist. In the clarity of the dots, the form of the body, surrounded by a halo of light, appears shimmering. Even when it appears, it is experienced by oneself without grasping at reality, so it is to realize that direct awareness is not a thing, but emptiness. If that meaning is determined, then self-awareness, which is not a thing, has a door to manifestation, so one becomes a Buddha in the Sambhogakaya. Those who have not realized this, even though they know that all the thoughts of the way of manifestation are their own minds, do not know emptiness, and see the doors of manifestation as different. They become things with characteristics, and are misled like ordinary people. Here, no matter how it appears, one should know that there is no grasping at reality. As the scriptures say: "That experience increases more and more, there is only appearance, but no object to grasp." As it is said, even if the experience of the manifestation of previous habitual patterns appears, it is only an appearance like the moon in the water, and not established as a real thing. It is introduced as emptiness. If it is not emptiness, then experience cannot appear, because it is emptiness, anything can appear, so the mind is introduced as emptiness. Thus, the appearance of momentary manifestation, the appearance of countless future, all the appearances of the three times.
