If self-nature is not liberated, even if you cultivate knowing emptiness, you will be attached to emptiness itself; because you cannot be liberated in the self-liberated, non-dual Dharmakaya, emptiness itself will become something with form. Therefore, apart from abiding in the state of stabilizing the mind through cultivation, there is nothing else to cultivate, which is called naturally liberating in its own state. Do not be attached to emptiness, thinking it is emptiness itself, but practice in the state of appearance and emptiness. For example, although the brightness and darkness of day and night arise from the earth, in the sky, sunlight and darkness are indistinguishable. Emptiness and the mind's clinging, these two will naturally be liberated. Sometimes, even if clinging and conceptual thoughts of appearance arise, leave them in a state of non-action, like a snake's knot, they will naturally liberate. If you cannot liberate, but remain in the clinging of appearance and emptiness, this is called a perverse view arising from a hidden place. Whatever arises, cultivate the opposite of it, then, apart from the essence of awareness, there is nothing else, and you will return to the previous state of non-reliance. Therefore, the mind has not been established as two essences, but has arisen from accumulating more than the coming and going, before and after, of the one essence. If there are two, then the previous conceptual thought will also arise, just as if you think of happiness, there is no unhappiness, and if you think of unhappiness, happiness will disappear. Therefore, be certain that appearance and emptiness have no other meaning, and apart from the appearing object and the antidote to dispel its emptiness, there is no other artificial cultivation. When the appearance of the one thing and the liberation of self-appearance become self-liberation, then you must decisively liberate emptiness as self-liberation. The tantra says: The object of cultivation and the cultivator are not established as two, the nature of mind is originally self-arisen and self-liberated. Therefore, appearance and emptiness are non-dual, the one self-arisen and self-liberated, like the moon in water, which cannot be divided into two. Appearance and emptiness are merely established in name, but in reality, they are recognized in the nature of great non-duality. If appearance and emptiness are not liberated in one self-nature, then no matter what Dharma you cultivate, you will not attain Buddhahood, and you will be lost on the wrong path. The difference between the Shravaka Vehicle and the higher vehicles also lies in whether appearance and mind are mixed or not. Appearance and emptiness are non-dual, while the Shravaka Vehicle cultivates emptiness by blocking appearance, thus falling into a one-sided grasping and clinging. Here, appearance and emptiness are two
