Ga go! Then, distinguishing the direction of the mind, one should practice meditating on deities and contemplating pure lands extensively. This will purify the obscurations of the mind. Then, fix the mind on a single point and do not be distracted. While settling on the object, contemplate that the earth, stones, mountains, and rocks have become empty. This will generate aversion to samsaric mind, and the mind will not wander in samsara. Through these, one will discern that samsara is of the nature of suffering. The tantra says, "Tighten tightly, loosen loosely; one word is the key instruction." Therefore, tightening is distinguishing the direction of samsara, and loosening is distinguishing the direction of liberation: Abandon all activities of body, both outer and inner, and remain in a state of non-doing and non-striving. Sit in the vajra posture, place the hands in meditative equipoise, straighten the body, and relax and settle in its natural state. This will liberate the body from clinging. Abandon all speech, both outer and inner, and let the unspeakable breath settle naturally. Speech will be liberated from clinging. Abandon all thoughts, both outer and inner, and remain in a state of not thinking about anything, without hope or fear, relaxed and at ease, unfeigned and unaltered, naturally loose, and settle without clinging. This will liberate the mind from clinging. Like this, combine it with the individual's wisdom and capacity, and practice for a few days. When thoughts arise naturally, say "Phat!" and shatter the thoughts in their place, and relax and loosen. The three doors of body, speech, and mind will become empty and clear. This will discern that liberation is the direction of happiness, and thus generate certainty in the Dharma, devotion to the guru, compassion for sentient beings, and recognize one's own mind, so that delusion arises as wisdom. Like this, these preliminary practices, like a guide for the blind, should be made into a habit, and then establish them on the main practice without error. Emaho! In the secret great vessel of instructions, first is this common preliminary instruction that is precious to all. Like me, Padmasambhava, I have concealed it as a profound treasure. In the degenerate age of the five hundred, may the great vidyadhara, the incarnate son who holds the banner of Shakya and practices mantra, meet with a fortunate one! Samaya! Chögyal Rinchen Lingpa extracted this treasure from the black turtle shell of Phawang in India. Ati! Tashi!

The Quintessential Instructions on the Great Ati Chikchö Kundrol: The Lamp of Essential Points. Homage to the Bhagavan, the Splendor of All Dharmas! The Quintessential Instructions of Ati Yangsang Chikchö, The means to reveal the Buddha's intention to sentient beings. The experiential instructions on the essential points, Without distinction of male, female, or neuter, Without distinction of old or young, Without distinction of sharp or dull faculties, Without distinction of good or bad karma, this meaning of liberation has three parts: preliminary, main practice, and concluding practice. First, the preliminary has four parts: 1. By generating impermanence in the mind-stream, the mind turns towards Dharma; 2. By generating bodhichitta, Dharma becomes the path; 3. By supplicating the lama, the confusion of the path is cleared away; 4. By distinguishing samsara and nirvana, confusion arises as wisdom. These four preliminaries are explained above. Second, the main practice has four instructions: 1. By thoroughly cutting through with the view, appearance and mind itself are recognized as the Trikaya, the Nirmanakaya; 2. By meditating on that, emptiness of mind is recognized as the Sambhogakaya; 3. By practicing that, self-liberation of emptiness is recognized as the Dharmakaya; 4. That fruit, spontaneous accomplishment, is recognized as the Buddha. First, by thoroughly cutting through with the view, appearance is established as mind: If appearance is not recognized as mind, Even if one strives for virtue in this life, One will not attain Buddhahood and must wander in samsara. Therefore, thoroughly cut through deluded appearance with the view: In a secluded place, one's body is comfortable on a cushion, Legs in vajra posture, hands in meditative equipoise, body straight, Relax the mind and sit in a state of non-doing. Speech rests in a state of unspeakable silence, relaxed and at ease. Mind is without hope or fear, without thought or concept, Eyes gaze into the sky without distraction, Awareness rests in that state, without thinking anything. Thus, Past thoughts cease, Future thoughts are not born, Present thoughts are not remembered, In the state of space, Awareness is one-pointed, clear and bright, Abiding in the equality of the three times, This is abiding in the expanse, the still abiding of emptiness. From that state, whatever thoughts arise from the three times, Because the arising of mind is not blocked, the objects of the six consciousnesses appear as appearances. Even if they arise, do not see them as a fault of the moving consciousness, But observe whether that thought resides in your own mind or comes from elsewhere and exists separately.
