One should train in the giving of material things, which is giving whatever one desires, and in the giving of fearlessness, which is protecting from temporary and ultimate suffering. Or, in order to accomplish one's own benefit, as it says in the Jataka tales: "Sit on a very low seat, generate the splendor of gentleness, look with joyful eyes, and words are like drinking nectar." Like that, listen to the sacred Dharma with respect for the virtuous spiritual friend. Or, in order to increase the merit of oneself and others, first proceed with bathing and cleansing. As it says in "Eliminating Wrong Views": "With mandalas and other rituals, always offer and recite the profound wisdom Paramita, and also realize its meaning. One verse and four verses, two verses and six doors, dharanis and the excellent conduct, the three skandhas and the three times, from one letter to twenty, meditating up to a hundred thousand, with unwavering vows, the wise read as they have attained." And also: "The ten grounds, the moonlight dharani, the Lankavatara Sutra, the tree ornaments, and the mother of the Buddhas, these should be read and offered." Like that, place the text to be read on top of a mandala, and arrange it with cushions and clothes, visualizing it as the nature of the Dharmakaya, and after offering mandalas and other offerings, think about its meaning in your heart, and read the words as they are. Or, in order to increase great realization, one should also diligently take and hold the sacred Dharma in terms of words, meaning, and texts, and so on. Or, in order to subdue those to be tamed, if someone wants to listen to the Dharma, observe their disposition, and to those who are arrogant and untamed, say: "How could I dare to be presumptuous in front of a great being like you? You are a person of great wisdom." Saying this, if they want to listen no matter what, as it says in the White Lotus Sutra: "In a clean and pleasing place, spread out various wide cushions, and to the single-minded beings who have gathered, show many kinds of speech." Like that, sit on a throne in a wide place, and with the mind of benefiting others, examine the vessel and explain the sacred Dharma according to what is appropriate. Or, in order for the Dharma that has been previously taken to remain for a long time without being forgotten, and to listen

In order to benefit others, one should strive to recite the words of the profound Dharma. Alternatively, regarding the meanings that have been heard, one should rely on pure scriptural and logical proofs, analyze with thought, and generate certainty. Alternatively, in order to realize the nature of reality, one should cultivate the special samadhi that combines shamatha and vipashyana. In summary, as it is said: "Based on discipline, possessing hearing and thought, one should diligently engage in meditation." Therefore, the activities of those who have gone forth are twofold: reading, hearing, and thinking, and abandoning and meditating. So, how does one accomplish activities through the door of hearing and thinking? In order to clarify the teachings, one should explain the meaning of the words as they are known to others; in order to dispel wrong views about the teachings, one should debate when the occasion arises; in order to make the teachings last long, one should compose treatises that do not contradict scriptural and logical systems. Alternatively, it can be summarized by the three wisdoms: the wisdom of hearing is the inner science that includes the scriptures and their commentaries, and as a means of guiding disciples with these, the four outer sciences of grammar, logic, crafts, and medicine should be studied expertly. The wisdom of thinking is to cultivate the meaning of what has been heard with thought, thereby generating correct certainty. The wisdom of meditation is to practice and cultivate the meaning of what has been known by adopting and abandoning, especially by abiding in non-conceptual samadhi. One should not think that it is enough to rely on any one of these alone, but should cultivate them all in connection, which is called abiding in the Dharma, and is the one who upholds the teachings of the Buddha's scriptures and realization. As it is said: "The Teacher's Dharma has two aspects, namely, the nature of scripture and realization. The one who upholds it is only the speaker and the practitioner." Thus it is said. These are the certainties of learning by diligently practicing the ten practices of Dharma at all times, such as during the day. Then, in order to widely spread offerings and generosity, one should enter the order of torma according to the occasion. If one wants to do a short Manjushri torma, it should be done according to the concise essence composed by Je Lama. If one likes brevity and does not do a Shakyamuni torma, then one's own Shakya
