Experience. For those who abandon virtuous deeds and attain quiescence, they devour each other, which is extremely unbearable. Some die for the sake of pearls, wool, bones, blood, flesh, and skin. Others, without power, are struck and exploited with feet, hands, whips, and iron hooks. Thus it is said. As for lifespan, the lifespan of animals is at most a kalpa. It is said that the longest-lived can live for a kalpa, while the shortest is uncertain. Therefore, contemplating the suffering of the lower realms means that even enduring putting a finger in fire for a day, staying naked in a cold snowy pit in winter, or going without food and drink for a day and night, or being bitten by mosquitoes and lice on the body is difficult to bear. How much more unbearable is the suffering of hell beings, hungry ghosts, and animals? Based on one's own current experience, one should be motivated by intense fear, sorrow, and renunciation to make this precious human life meaningful. Secondly, contemplating the faults of higher realms means that by accumulating small, medium, and large virtuous deeds corresponding to merit, one is born successively as humans, desire realm gods, and gods of higher realms, and enjoys the happiness of those respective states. Therefore, since there is no opportunity for happiness in the lower realms, one should strive to attain the higher realms. However, one should think that all of samsara is of the nature of suffering and therefore without essence. Not only are the lower realms so painful, but one should also think that the higher realms are of the nature of suffering. Among these, there are three: contemplating the suffering of humans, contemplating the suffering of asuras, and contemplating the suffering of gods. First, contemplating the suffering of humans: In general, at the time of birth, one must stay for months in the mother's womb, which is narrow, dark, foul-smelling, and where the changes of hot and cold are unbearable. Then, one experiences suffering like being pulled out of the birth canal head first, like being whipped with thorns, and like a bird being carried away by a hawk when taken in hand. Then, at the time of aging, the color fades, and the body's complexion becomes unattractive, so it becomes bluish-black and ashen. The hair turns white. The radiance and form of the senses deteriorate, so the teeth fall out. The body becomes hunched and the limbs crooked. The flesh dries up. The skin loosens. The face is filled with wrinkles. Strength diminishes, so it is difficult to stand. Walking becomes staggering. Sitting becomes wobbly. Speaking becomes stammering. The senses deteriorate, so

,śreṣṭhoṃ manastāpastathā hīneṣu kāyikaḥ। duḥkhadvayenedaṃ jagat pratikṣaṇaṃ hanyate॥

Eyes are unclear and ears are deaf. Enjoyment diminishes, if food is little, there is hunger, if much, it cannot be digested, etc. One cannot enjoy desirable things, and it is not pleasing to everyone. Also, due to past karma and sudden events, the four elements are disturbed by disease, causing pain to increase and the body to weaken. One has no control over enjoying desired food, drink, and sleep. One has to rely on unwanted medicine and treatments, and there is endless suffering from the fear of death. At the time of death, no matter what medicine, treatment, or rituals are done, they are of no help. All the enjoyments, power, retinue, and friends that were previously attained with effort, and even the cherished and beloved body, must be left behind, and one dies with intense suffering of being cut off from life. These four sufferings must be experienced by everyone in general, and even in the intervals when the four sufferings are relatively minor, there are also specific sufferings. Even if one risks life and limb and endures countless hardships to achieve small comforts in this life, such as enjoyment and power, there is the suffering of not achieving one's desires. There is the suffering of encountering unpleasant conditions such as cold, heat, hunger, thirst, disease, evil spirits, enemies, and thieves. There is the suffering of being separated from the glory of joy and happiness, such as relatives, friends, retinue, and enjoyment. In short, the more retinue and enjoyment the wealthy have, the greater the suffering of protecting them. The poor, on the other hand, search for desired items such as food and clothing but cannot find them, and they are filled with the suffering of poverty. As it says in the Jataka: "One is tormented by guarding, two is exhausted by searching. Whether rich or poor, in neither is there happiness." And in the Four Hundred Verses it says: " श्रेष्ठों मनस्तापस्तथा हीनेषु कायिकः। , śreṣṭhoṃ manastāpastathā hīneṣu kāyikaḥ। duḥkhadvayenedaṃ jagat pratikṣaṇaṃ hanyate॥ The best have mental suffering, and the inferior have bodily suffering. This world is destroyed moment by moment by two sufferings." As it is said, these are examples of what we have directly experienced. Second, contemplating the suffering of the Asuras (demigods). First, when they see the perfect glory of the gods, they are always filled with intense, unbearable suffering due to jealousy. From time to time, they fight with the gods, and because the Asuras have less merit and power, they suffer intense suffering from being killed, beaten, having their limbs cut off, and being torn apart.
